Are you familiar with Neil Postman? He's the author of several books on education, technology and society. I highly recommend his book "Technopoly."
One of his main points is this: Technological change is ecological, not additive. As new technologies become ubiquitous, other technologies fade. This forming and fading affects the skills and intelligences that we exercise as well, as new technologies emphasize very specific sets of skills and paradigms.
