I know I have to use a custom ipsw throughout the process but I've only ever used pwnage before and am unclear how redsn0w figures into the process.

I'm running the latest TU v4.30.05
SHS'H's saved for:
iPhone4 4.0.1 (8A306)
iPhone4 4.0.2 (8A400)
iPhone4 4.1 (8B117)
iPhone4 4.2.1 (8C148)
iPhone4 4.2b3 (8C5115c)
iPhone4 4.3 (8F190)
iPhone4 4.3b1 (8F5148b)
iPhone4 4.3b2 (8F5153d)
iPhone4 4.3b3 (8F5166b)
Again. I'm back to 4.0.1 and not jail broken. The phone activates legitimately through AT&T, but I want to save my ability to unlock later if necessary.
I've put it in DFU and tried restoring my custom ISPW for 4.1 & 4.2.1 and neither works. It goes through the installation like it's restoring, but at the end I get a 1600 error. 4.3.1 doesn't work either but it fails at the beging saying I'm not allowed to install this versions, which obviously is because TU doesn't have the blob for it. I'm confused why Cydia doesn't have that blob saved, but it's too late now. The only IPSW that has worked is the official 4.0.1 one.
At the end of the restore I end up with an error (1600) at the end with a black screen on the phone... the phone is recognizable at that point to iTunes as being in recovery mode but is completely unresponsive to power and home keys... just a black screen, and the vibrate switch doesn't even make it vibrate.
I'd really like to get back to 4.2.1 Jailbroken. Maybe I've done this so many times I'm missing something obvious.
I create a custom IPSW with pwnage 4.3 using the simple method (I tried advanced too). At the end I follow the timer and put the phone into DFU. It shows up in iTunes needing to be restored, I option-click restore and select the custom IPSW, it spend 15 minutes restoring/verifiying etc... and then I get a 1600 error.
I'm going to reboot and give it a try in a couple hours... thanks again for the help.
I put it in DFU,

The thing is when I try to install either my custom 4.2.1 or custom 4.3.1 it fails and I have to again go back to 4.0.1.
Do I need to be running TinyUmbrella's TSS Server to restore a custom IPSW for 4.2.1 or 4.3.1 right now? ...since Apple is presumably only signing 4.3.2. I never tried to do a custom restore to anything other than current.
I'm about to try recreating the custom IPSW for 4.3.1, but I'm getting frustrated.

I don't need to unlock now (I'm on AT&T and have never unlocked, but don't want to lose the ability to do so if/when I need to). It sounds like the answer to this is yes, but obviously I want to be sure.
