All Facebook : How To Measure Facebook Page Engagement

How are the "impressions" and "feedback" % calculated. I am assuming impressions are number of news feeds the story made it into and feedback is the percentage of those users that liked or commented? What about clicking a link? Is that a part of the feedback %? Also, I have noticed that you can come back to these number 30 or 60 days later and they have continued to go up. Is there a lifespan on these numbers? Why would they increase that far out from a published date?

new media lisa : Business people: don't dance on the bleeding edge of social media

It seems like some cornerstone of the internet dies every week. Blogging, RSS, etc. I think it is more of a symptom of the boredom of insiders and the super savvy. But you are right, it does not do much for the business owners and marketers trying to learn how to make the social web work for them. I would advise anyone trying to learn social media to stay away from blogs that sensationalize. Blogging will be around for some time. Social media as well. Invest in both.

Agreed Sam. I think they would be farther along if it were not for the economic situation reducing a lot of staffs and budgets. I know a couple agencies who plan to bring on Social Media staff, but have not been able to budget it out yet.

Jason Keath : Should All Newspapers Charge for Online Content?

Not really the point I was getting at Harry. I just think as a hypothetical, it would get Newspapers thinking in better directions. Take the pay for content model off the table, and what would replace it?

Jason Keath : Should All Newspapers Charge for Online Content?

Agreed, I don't think charging or figuring out new ways to charge for online content is the answer at all. I think you are right, new content directions are a big part of the answer. From iPhone to Kindle to TV, etc.

Have you seen the Visit My Baltimore site mentioned in the post? It is not a journalism effort necessarily, but I think it is a good example of the types of experimenting Newspapers need to look toward.

Completely agree Scott \"it could be the ultimate suicidal move\". I more or less was using that last line of yours as the assumption for this post. Since it would would more or less open up the playing field for new online media to be an even bigger piece of the news puzzle for people. That open playing field would result in the experimenting that is needed for newspapers to succeed online.

Thanks for the historical preface though, it is important to consider.

Jason Keath : How Twitter Can Stop the Bleeding

What is the risk of alienating existing users? If any of the suggestions above diminished the experience for existing users, I would agree with you, Twitter should stay away. But I do not see that. New users and the growth Twitter as a whole brings with it certain things that veteran Twitter users do not like. That is inevitable. But how would improving the initial experience for new users negatively impact the experience of existing users? I ask this in regard to the above suggestions only mind you.

Jason Keath : How Twitter Can Stop the Bleeding

I did not mention an auto-generated list of friends. I recommended suggested list of relevant connections. You still choose who you connect with. It encourages the \"communal nature\" of Twitter and makes it easier for newbies to learn about that community. I think making it a little easier for new users to find their way around is a sound goal for Twitter as a business and as a community. I do not see any of the suggestions above affecting existing users negatively.

I am not talking about \"commercialization\" in my suggestions. I am talking about retaining customers. If when you say commercialization you mean Twitter treating users like customers, I think this type of thinking would only improve the service. Twitter is a business with millions of dollars invested. When is it smart for a business not to try to retain new customers?

I would say the whole Grader series by Hubspot is meant more as an inbound marketing tool than a serious business or marketing tool for the end user. However, for Hubspot they are serious marketing tools. But I agree Jim, the whole tracking, analytics, brand sentiment vendor industry only going to grow for the forseeable future as businesses demand better tools.

agreed. I am hungry for that day. I imagine by the end of the year, we may have another web 2.0, social media, semantic web term to replace it all once more. I doubt we will escape the unending nomage drama anytime soon. "I work on the internet" is still my answer for a lot of people when they ask what I do for a living.

I bet you guys are having fun Jim. The thing about working in Social Media, is no one is trying to trick anyone or game the system. Or if they are, they are unsuccessful for the most part. It all functions on the premise of giving value to one another, helping one another, with cool technology. How could that not be fun to do every day.

Jason Keath : 25 Social Media Agencies to Watch

Perkett and Edelman were on my short list Jeremy. I think they both have "made a splash" and invested in social media well as part of the future of their industry. In all, I probably had 12 more companies in my internal discussion for this post. Some just did not make it for me personally as part of the top 12. The list is completely subjective and reflects more about me than the companies excluded. This is by no means a definitive list of anything. Just something cool to share. I would also add, that of all the disciplines included in the social media, PR is probably what I have the least experience with. I am sure that affects my desicion as well. I hope to see more Social Media Agencies pop up as well. Most of the ones out there have not been around as long as Ignite. They are typically pretty small shops, so yes it will take time for many of them to make a splash, especially with big agencies and media companies buying up any of the ones that look promising. The nature of the beast I think. Thanks for your additions.
