Interesting that you express concern about irradiation plants and safety issues since most major hospitals have as much, or possibly more irradiation capability than plants in this country.

Research is an interesting topic. I have eaten and enjoyed "irradiated" food off and on for almost 50 years, having enjoyed a nice meal in the early 1060's of roast beef, strawberries and numerous other items that had been irradiated and stored for an extended (months to a year) periods of time. If there were two jars of peanut butter on the store shelf, one irradiated, I know which one I would take. My "research is first hand experience!

Oh, come on now. I believe they read it enough to make sure their earmarks were in it before they signed it.

At least it should be a big Gov't program. Aseptic packaging with radiation sterilization (irradiation) would save the nation millions in energy costs every year because the products would be "shelf stable" and palatable for months without refrigeration. Don't know what the Idaho State University reference means, but I suspect some of the scientists there are more qualified in radiation technology than those (if there are any) at most of the liberal arts many of the technical schools. It is a speciallized field.

WOW, I didn't realize that microwave technology for cooking was that old. That was 3 to 4 years before the atomic bomb (atomic age).

Thanks for the references. The numerous times I've eaten irradiated foods, I've found them to be very safe and enjoyable eating.

Thank you I will. So labelled products will be my first choice whenever I can find them. The few times I've found them and/or tried them, I have found such products to be safe and quite good.

No, you are right -also alpha and beta radiation are released, as well as neutrons, which really do the damage.
Gamma is used to sterilize foods because alpha and beta cannot penetrate far enough to be effective. Food irradiation is an effective, proven way to preserve food and has been used for many years in a number of countries. Had the peanuts that went into the peanut products recalled, there would have been no deaths or illnesses or recall. I have eaten and enjoyed "irradiated" foods many times and find them better and safer than their counterparts that have tossed around on store shelves.
