And if you have ever worked on a prevailing wage job in the area, thank a Union, because they usually set the prevailing wages in this area.

If this drinking occurred in the office, chances are it was a salary based employee who dropped off a resume to the company and was hired, yet everyone is ready to say must be the UNIONS! The design teams, supervisors, CAD guys (the people who usually work in the office), are usually hired by the company, not sent to the company through a labor union.
So if you must feel the need to blame the UNIONS, do so, but remember to thank them when you get home from work on Friday, and crack open a cold one.
