GazetteOnline.com : Hlas column: So far, Hawkeyes are coolheaded and coldblooded

Great article on a very satisfying win Mike. The late TD by ISU irked me. Wish Iowa hadn't given it up so easily and quickly, but I wonder why Rhoads left Arnaud in while Ferentz had his second and third teamers in the game.

Jennifer, you brought back a lot of memories with this story. You are very fortunate to have both of your grandmothers still living, let alone to hear first hand about how they grew up. Great read, but too short.

GazetteOnline.com : Death of a rivalry: Iowa-Wisconsin

I would have simply made the new divisions based on time zones. 6 teams in the eastern time zone and 6 teams in the central time zone. Border rivalries would have been preserved, and protected rivalries would have been included. But big money, and the desire to appease fOSU and Mecheatagain came first.

The new divisions sicken me. Not playing Wisconsin every year is unforgivable. All in the name of appeasing Ohio State and Michigan. Purdue as our protected rival? Please! The logical thing to do would be to divide the conference by time zones: 6 schools in the eastern time zone and 6 in the central time zone. But the almighty TV dollars once again win out. Instead of preserving natural border rivalries like Wisconsin and Illannoy, the Big Ten sends them to the east. Simply unbelievable. Instead of doing the sensible thing by allowing schools to conserve travel expenses, not to mention the fans, they posture in the direction of Ohio State. Simply gutless. How does Gary Barta justify his agreement to go along with this scenario?

GazetteOnline.com : Cedar Rapids man charged with threatening ex-wife, children

I know this man. His son played on my son's baseball team this summer. Spent time speaking with him at the games, as well as a post season pizza party. He seemed quite friendly and supportive of his son's efforts on the field. He and his ex-wife seemed to get along and sit with one another at games. Very sorry to read this story. He is a long way from home in Iraq, alone in America after fleeing Sadam's regime. There is no excuse for his actions, but try to understand that there is always more to the story than meets the eye.

GazetteOnline.com : What's your sports fan Bucket List? Here's mine:

Great, thought provoking article Mike. Can't disagree with your choices, although Fenway Park wasn't a great experience for me, as the seats were narrow and faced away from home plate, which left me with a stiff neck. And the outside area around Fenway left much to be desired. Tiger Stadium was a real thrill, especially because I got to sit with the legendary Ernie Harwell for an entire game in the old press box. He was a true gentleman and pointed out many of the oddities and history of the old bandbox. It was truly one of my favorite sports moments. Old Comiskey Park was a classic when the two taverns were across the street from first base. Very inviting environment, with great food and beer choices, plus dedicated knowledgeable fans. Wrigley is a dump, but the neighborhood atmosphere is interesting. Old Memorial Stadium in Baltimore was also a special place to see a baseball game. Yankee Stadium was historic and classic, but nothing special or intimate. Watching my brother's Mizzou football team defeat Joe Montana and Notre Dame in South Bend was memorable. Great game day atmosphere. My bucket list would include the following, in addition to your list. A night game in Dodger Stadium. Any game at Pittsburgh's PNC Park. Would love to see my St. Louis Cardinals win a World Series at home just once. I've been to two World Series games at Busch II and one at Busch III, but they weren't Series clinchers. I would die a happy man if I could witness a Hawkeye national championship game at the Rose Bowl against USC, just to wipe out the foul taste of the Orange Bowl defeat so many years ago, not to mention the three other Rose Bowl losses under Hayden. Would also love to see a Hawkeye wrestling national championship in Oklahoma somewhere, anywhere, just to see the look on the Okies faces. Finally, my bucket list would have to include a chance to watch my son win a state championship in football and/or basketball for Iowa City Regina some day.
