Stuff Christians Like - Jon Acuff : Setting Physical Boundaries in Dating Relationships

I'm pretty sure he said "other woman" So if you lust after you're own wife, its the same as sex, which is okay. Conversely, lusting over your girlfriend is NOT okay. A least that's the way I've always interpreted it.

Stuff Christians Like - Jon Acuff : Wishing they'd stop releasing "unrated" editions of movies you want to see.

Yeah, I've read that before, but "unwholesome talk" is a pretty dynamic word. If it was just "Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths" it would be hard to argue, but it goes on after that to say "but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen" This makes it sound a lot more like its talking about more than words, but how they're used. Do you use profanity to be more eloquent with certain people, speaking in their language, or do you use it to cuss people out, and make them feel worse? I still haven't addressed all the verses that are used to argue against profanity, and in all honesty, I don't know one way or another, but in this verse, I don't think Jesus is talking about it.

Ask a woman to take you to a paint store and find what color of red paint will match something in whatever. You'll get a very eye opening experience, just be sure to wear comfortable shoes, cause you'll be there a LOOONG time.

Stuff Christians Like - Jon Acuff : Secretly believing in the magical power of the number 777.

Here you go, John. Consider this potential scenario-You are driving home from the store to bring your wife some flowers and a box of chocolate, not because of a holiday, but because of your vast sea of love you have for her. You see that construction is being done on the road, and it is closed. You must take the detour. You are driving, when suddenly, you see a baby deer step out into the road. Without second thought, you selflessly and swiftly swerve off the road, rolling with your car. You wake up, not seriously injured, just a few bruises and cuts. You climb out of your overturned car, and find yourself in the middle of nowhere. It is very cold, and you are hungry. You need to build a fire, but you have no matches or lighter. You know it is possible to build fire without matches or a lighter, but you don't know how! No fear! You have your Ipad with you that your loving wife bough for you! You go to Youtube, and find an instructional video on how to make a fire with nothing but sticks and your belt. You also find instructional videos on how to make a bow and arrow, how to hunt wild rabbits, where to find water, and how to make a really cool hat out of mud and leaves. The search party finds you two days later. They find you relaxing comfortably by your fire, chewing on your rabbit and sipping your cold spring water, while studying the bible on your Ipad. They take you home, and your wife runs into your arms. She embraces you tightly and says "oh honey! I'm so glad you had your Ipad! I don't know how you would of survived without it!"

Stuff Christians Like - Jon Acuff : SCL on CNN.

I thought it was a good post, and I agree with most of it, but I want to make it very clear that I believe CNN is more than a secular network. They do more than just sensationalize the crazies. You won't be on the path to hell from watching an occasional series or two, but I think watching CNN regularly WILL really hurt you spiritually.

hahaha this is great. On a side note, does anyone else feel guilty for hating praise and worship music? "I can only imagine" etc? Don't get me wrong, I love Christian music, Christian Rock, Christian country, old fashioned gospel, Christian Metal, Christian country, hymnals etc. I just don't like praise. Its just boring for me, and it makes me feel forced. I'm sorry, but I can't get into super praise mode while I'm driving to the grocery store. I like it live, since the songs are easy to sing along, but in the car, I'd much rather have "God must really love me" or something like it. Am I the only one like this?

Jon, you should TOTALLY do a post on the people who always make people feel like heathens over everyday phrases, Examples: "Man, I love these potato chips" "You shouldn't love an idol. Only people and Jesus should have love" "I wish the weekend was here" "You shouldn't wish away your days. Your time here on earth is a precious, limited resource." "I'm going to go to the store tomorrow" "The rapture might come today, you never know. Only the lord knows what days you have." "Man, I'm hungry" "You should be hungry for God's word, not material food that doesn't last. Man cannot live on bread alone. That's all I can think of for now, but you get the point. Not sure if you want to do some of these individually, since you've already covered the "You're rich globally!" one.

Stuff Christians Like - Jon Acuff : The guy who says you are rich globally.

Abraham wasn't wealthy. Abraham was over 90 years old(and not retired) when the bible starts heavily talking about him. Even if you're making very little, a significant amount of wealth can be accrued in that amount of time. I'm not sure about Issac either, although I know Solomon was wealthy. Jesus was not wealthy either. The Wise men traveled on their own time, and not on the orders of the king. Its true that they brought him expensive things, and that Mary and Joseph could of sold them(it doesn't say they did), but even if they sold them, it wouldn't be enough to live "high on the hog" for the rest of his life. Carpentry is not a rich man's job. It doesn't pay well either. Also, if you remember, Jesus rode in on donkey. Not a horse. If he was wealthy, he would of almost certainly had a horse. Horses were massive status symbols in those days. You're right, the U.S doesn't have any large physical exports, no diamonds, gold, oil, coal, lumber. The U.S makes its money off of knowledge, and it always has. Ever since the U.S was founded, we've been the leader in technology, and we still are. You're computer might of been made in China, but it was invented in America.

I loved Jon's post, since it just came up during a revival sermon like 2 or 3 days ago. I've got to agree with your post too. Its a general message that's pretty common among pastors and older men. Maybe not necessarily "your rich globally" but something along the lines of "you think your life is bad? There are people in... that have... to go through! How dare you complain! Your life is perfect! you have no right to complain! You don't have the right to feel pain!" They rarely use words that strong, and they aren't always as clear, but that's definitely a prevalent message in modern Christianity. This is contradictory to what we're usually told;that money doesn't buy happiness. Money DOES apparently buy happiness, since as long as you live in a wealthy country, any complaining you do is just whining. Its also similar logic to how some people justify sin. "Well Its not like I'm having pre-marital sex" "Well its not like I'm doing crack" "Well its not like I'm shoplifting" "Well its not like you only get to eat once every two days" I can agree with it somewhat. We don't really have that many physical things to complain about. The bible says that the pen is mightier than the sword though. Emotional things bring people down more than the physical ever will. When people hear this message a lot, they think "oh, well I don't need marital counseling, I just need to quit complaining and be thankful". They hide important issues until they explode, and divorce happens, or atheism happens, or suicide happens. Christians are called to be sensitive to ALL needs, physical, emotional and spiritual.

Stuff Christians Like - Jon Acuff : Should little kids be allowed in big church?

I really don't think kids are that distracting. Of all the things that will distract someone from a sermon, three or four incidents of 30 seconds of a crying child is at the bottom. Maybe its worse at your church, but I've never had a serious problem at mine. television, video games, cell phones, gossip, and just general distracting thoughts; they're all a bigger problem for me(and probably most people) than a kid will ever be. I don't really know what you're implying about ushers and other people "taking care" of disruptive children. I don't have any children, but if I did, and someone put hands on them, church or no church, it wouldn't turn out well.

I agree, but its really a hard balance. I see a lot of teenagers and young adults(-30) playing with their cellphones or talking during the service. I can't help but think that the "play quietly, tolerate the sermon and we'll go out for ice cream" mentality has something to do with that. Its really a shame; I used to love church but hate the sermon, until I started taking a bible and paper and looking up the passages and taking notes. Ideally(in my opinion), children would go to age appropriate services(or have activities to do in their seat, with the occasional guidance of their parents/guidance of a teacher)and slowly be weaned off of it, having more structured services, until they're old enough to fully, actively engage in the services to their fullest value.

I've got to agree with this one. Maybe not necessarily hatred, but certainly resentment and unrealistic standards. Maybe its because I sit near the front, but a crying child in church really isn't that much of a distraction for me. The people that throw dirty looks, at least in my experience, are the same ones who are playing with their cell phones, talking, or looking down and daydreaming for 90% of the sermon. It takes a hard, active stance to focus on a sermon, to keep from thinking about other things. 20 seconds of a crying child is not a big deal compared to 20 minutes of Satan's bombardment that you need to think about the latest football game or what chores you need to do when you get home. If its really that big of a problem for people, then they can look up the passages and take notes to help stay focused. That's certainly helped me. Back on topic, I really agree that society has a problem with children. They can't be held to the same standards as adults, and they need special treatment from EVERYONE to make up for it. Having said that, I really don't know about taking children to the "real" service(except occasionally) since the services aren't geared toward them at all. Really, a child can't fully participate in the service until they're around 13, perhaps older. They won't be able to read the hymnals/lyrics, the sermons won't be relevant to them, they won't have the patience to take notes/look up passages, and they won't have the attention span. What results is they'll learn to tolerate the service instead of participating in it, which I believe can be a bad message to send. I liked the system my old church had. They would have children's worship, but it would be in the sanctuary, towards the back. They would pass out coloring books and do little lessons. It wasn't very wholesome, and it was mainly just for distraction, but I think it could work if they tried to teach them some things.
