The question poised by my fellow student is a very good one. I am not sure I have the correct answer, but I believe money is more important to becoming a legal immigrant in the United States than hard work is. As screwed up as that sounds I believe money is probably the main decider on whether someone can become a legal immigrant in this country.
We are told at a young age that if you work hard for anything you can achieve it. This is the phrase The United States has almost trademarked. They have told this message to generations and generations of people to spread the idea that hard work is key to success, otherwise known as the American Dream. With all of this in mind I find it difficult to say that money is the main decider on becoming an immigrant, rather than hard work. The main reason I think money is more important is because as Sam said in class a big reason we let immigrants into our country is so they can help the economy. If an immigrant tries to become a citizen of the United States then I am assuming the people in charge are looking for someone who is looking for work, but has a decent amount of money. Instead of them looking for a new citizen that is poor, but works harder than his counterparts. Hard work is not something that can be compared as easily as the amount of money somebody has. This makes it difficult for hard workers to be noticed and therefore harder for them to get into the country. Unlike hard work money can be easily compared and therefore it is easy to say who has more money than another. The people in charge are trying to do what is best for the United States and therefore they are looking for people who can boost the economy instead of adding poor immigrants.
If my opinion that money is more important than hard work is correct, then I am getting different feelings about our country’s policy. On the basis of morals, I hope money is not the key indicator on whether to grant US citizenship to a person. We as country, being based on the American Dream, must reevaluate the messages we are sending if in fact hard working people are getting rejected as citizens in this country. I understand that The United States cannot accept every immigrant that tries to get into our country, but hard working people should be given chances that people with money have. I am not the most knowledgeable person on how immigration works in the United States, but after writing this paper I hope money is not the ultimate decider between two people.

In response to the comment of whether or not men feel the need to conform in society to the degree that woman do. I do believe that men feel the need to conform to society just like women. It may not be as noticeable, but men definitely feel the need to look good just like women do on a daily basis. Why is it not as noticed by people in society? Is it men who do not show their need to conform as much as women or is it societies fault? I am going to dive into these questions and offer my best opinion on this matter.
My main feeling for why it does not seem that men conform to society is because men do not judge or notice other men as much as women do on a regular basis. This is obvious by attending class and listening to the woman comment on who they get dressed up for when they go out at night. Many people said they dress up to impress other woman because they know that is who is looking at them when they go out. I agree with this statement because as a man most people just look at other women and notice if they are good looking at first glance. It is rare for a guy to say something to a girl about whether her shoes match the blouse she is wearing. Unlike women men do not look at each others outfits as much because it is not as important to them. Men still feel the need to dress up and look good it is just not as important to the average male.
A good example of a way men conform to societies pressures is by lifting weights and going to the gym. Every guy wants to have six pack abs and look like a Greek god. This arises because most star athletes are portrayed with no shirt on and are noticeably “jacked”. Most women find a guy with big muscles attractive and therefore many men see the need to lift weights and become stronger. If being “jacked” was not portrayed as a good thing by society, then most men would not work out.
After looking far into this issue I definitely believe men find the need to conform to society. Whether it is looking good or dressing nicely there is definitely a want for women to be attracted to us. This attraction causes men to work out and lift weights in order to fulfill what women like. Whether women notice it or not men are always around them trying to impress or be acknowledged. Obviously not all men are like this, but I believe the majority of men are like this and see the need to conform in order to be more liked by other.

This video game was first brought to my attention in my recitation class. We spoke briefly on what we thought about this game and what messages it was spreading to its audience. I could not believe that such a game could be produced and later sold to thousands of people in Japan. A common belief is that it is just like all the shoot’em up games that exist in the United States, but this game is far worse.
Shoot’em up games have existed in the United States for a long time. Whether it is Grand Theft Auto, Call of Duty, or James Bond a large majority of video games today are based on the premise of killing someone in order to gain power or achieve a mission. Although many people believe these games relay a message of killing others, I disagree. These shooting games have very little real world situations in them besides Cal of Duty, which takes place over seas as a soldier. It is obvious when playing Grand Theft Auto that the situations and missions you are asked to achieve are very unrealistic and cannot happen in real life. Although the “rape game in” Japan can be argued in the same way, I believe it is sending the wrong message to people playing this game. The main reason I say this is because the entire objective of the game is to find a women and rape her. This is an extremely offensive matter to any women who sees or reads about this game. I am not positive how this game was able to be created and put on the shelves without a certain committee or company official saying this game is offensive. Maybe in Japan video games are solely recreational and the citizens realize what they play on the television is completely unacceptable in society. However, I do not think this is the case. Teenagers who get their hands on this game may believe raping a woman is alright just because this game allows them to do so.
Video games are usually an easy target of scrutiny from society. Video games that involve sex, drugs, and guns are always being questioned in society to whether or not they are sending the wrong message to children. I am not a believer that children are being brainwashed by these video games and are going to go shoot up their school because they played Grand Theft Auto for 3 hours the night before. However, I do not agree that a game where the sole purpose is to sexually assault and beat a woman is ok. At some point we need to step in and stop these gruesome games to stop being produced. Once people begin getting offended there has to be a line that is drawn and this game definitely crosses that line.

16 years ago @ Race Relations Project - The White Minorities · 0 replies · +1 points

Reading this article is extremely interesting. I had no clue that white people were even close to becoming a minority. So this article is actually very eye-opening. I am curious after reading this article to whether or not this will actually affect how white people stand in society. Will black and Hispanic people gain more advantages in the business world? Even though white people may become a minority, will their status change in society or will they remain on the “top of the pyramid”? I am going to address these questions and see what I believe is actually going to happen once white people become a minority.
If white people become a minority I do not believe much will change for at least 15 years after. White people hold a large majority of high office positions in the United States. Therefore, it would be difficult at first for people who are not white to advance a lot. However, I do believe that people who are not white would find it easier to live their everyday lives though. Since more minorities would hold everyday jobs, because of the increase in people that are not white, they would be able to aim for more success since there would be more opportunities.
Although white people would become a minority overall they would still have a larger population than any other race in the United States. For example white people would become a minority to all other black, Hispanic, and Asian people combined. White people would still out number any other race in the United States if they were matched up. Which I believe is the ultimate factor in white people no longer being on the “top of the pyramid”. Although white people may not lose any “power” in the race world, but I do believe other races would progress. Like I said before I believe minorities would begin to hold more jobs in different communities. This would show a good image for the youth of these families and more people would begin to grow up with higher hopes.
This article was extremely interesting and I had no clue that white people were becoming a minority in the United States. The fact that I had not heard about this before I read this article was interesting in itself. Is the media trying to hold this from most of the citizens in the USA or am I just ignorant to what is going on in the race relations world? Hopefully white people becoming a minority will help the United States transform and become more accepting to other races. Hopefully as white people become less of the majority in the United States all races will be able to get along and make strides to become more culturally accepting.

16 years ago @ Race Relations Project - Those Dolls Say Alot A... · 0 replies · +1 points

My jaw dropped after I watched this video in class on Thursday. How is it at such a young age we are able to be “brainwashed”? Do we make these decisions or is it forced upon us by outside sources? For children this young to think that the color of their skin represents “evil” is insane. I am not sure what causes such young children to think this when they see two dolls, but we need to find out why this occurs. It is wrong for minorities to believe white people are better before they are even able to realize what this means. I am going to try and let you know why I think this occurs at such a young age.
My senior year in high school I took an African American history class. In this class my teacher showed us this study and we discussed why these results might have occurred. One of the reasons we found is because of the cartoons that may secretly hide this from a more mature audience. For example in Looney Tunes Daffy Duck is black and he is often seen stuttering and portrayed as stupid. In another children’s book that we read in class it showed a bunch of different rabbits and a different color was portrayed for each color. All the rabbits had a rhyme of somethings that were that color and what the color is usually portrayed by. The picture of the black rabbit did not show a face of the rabbit and made it seem as if the rabbit was running from something. My class might have looked to in depth into these children’s book and cartoons, but it should not go unnoticed that these two black characters were portrayed this way. I am not sure of any other examples with this in it, but I am sure they exist. Another reason for these feelings from the young kids are that dark colors are usually portrayed as evil in most things. The night is dark and most children are afraid of the dark. This could relate to the reason why these children feel this way about the dark colored doll.
Trying to find why these children feel this way about these dolls is a crucial part of solving this problem. If we want to change the way future children grow up so they can be “color blind” then finding the resolution is key. If it is the media that is causing this feelings then more regulations must be made so these colors are not portrayed in this way. Seeing children of this age say the color of their skin is bad is terrible. We need to change the way children think so this is not a problem in the future.

In response to the prom that was canceled due to a lesbian couple trying to go to prom is mind-blowing. When I first read this I could not believe it. We are living in the 21st Century and gay marriage has been legalized in many different states. With this in mind I did not see the justification the school made to not allow these two students to attend the prom. This decision is cancel the prom devastates many students who look forward to this date throughout the four years they attend high school. How does someone believe they have the right to tell two people they cannot attend the prom and in retaliation banned the entire prom to make sure these two lesbian females do not attend?
When I first read this I thought about how I would have felt is this happened at my high school. The first reaction that came to my mind would be anger. Prom is the one thing every high school student looks forward to and to have it taken away because two students want to be a same sex couple is ridiculous. We live in the United States a country that prides itself on freedom and all the individuals it has within its boundaries. We have amendments that allow freedom of speech and freedom of religion, but we are not allowed to love people of the same sex? This seems obscure to me and I cannot put a point on what the administration of this high school was thinking. The reason the high school gave for not allowing the students to go was because it said in the rules that no same sex couples were permitted at the prom. Why is it necessary to cancel the entire prom because two students want to take the person in which they care about most to the prom? Maybe part of the reason I feel this way is because of the LGBT lecture I attended in Sam’s class. However, I do not see how other people especially a school’s administration reacting to its students can be so insensitive.
School is a place where you want to learn and further your education. How is it in a place where you feel secure with your friends can people be so discrete and unforgiving to its students. For the school to prevent senior prom from occurring is an enormous repercussion to take with an incident so small as this. In any other circumstance if someone breaks a rule in school they are punished by receiving a detention or suspension from school. Why is it necessary to cancel an entire school function because two students tried to go break the rules, which are unjust anyway? This school has made terrible decisions and beither the board of education or someone else with some power needs to step in and do something about this.

I have never seen this show, however, I thought the question brought up a very good point. I am not sure if this applies to other shows as well since I do not watch many reality television shows. The fact that this show is predominately white however brings up many questions. Does this show the show’s view on interracial dating? Does the show believe primarily white people watch this show? I do not know the answers to these questions but I will try to explain my viewpoint on the matter.
As a white man I do not seem to be as sensitive to noticing these sorts of things when watching television. I am a huge sports fan and find myself only watching ESPN with an occasional switch over to the Food Network. Sports are pretty diverse for the most part, so this question is an interesting one for me. The first thing that comes to mind when hearing the question is the feelings of many Americans on interracial dating. I do not the exact statistics, but I believe over the years many more people have become open to interracial dating. With this in mind why would the show not bring more people of color into the show? I am just as curious as you, and maybe it has something to do with the producers beliefs on interracial dating. However, since ABC has been successful for a very long time maybe they believe this is the best way to get the biggest audience. I do not believe this is the reason because by adding more of a diverse cast of people, the audience can become broader. This would bring a much bigger audience since you would be reaching out to a much broader variety of people. The Bachelor and Bachelorette are one of those television shows that have had a vast amount of seasons. Maybe a new strategy could be to use only a diverse cast in one season. If they keep the show with just white people and no new “pizzazz”, who would continue to watch it? Adding a diverse cast may not only generate a bigger audience, but it could possibly add to an already popular show.
The Bachelor and Bachelorette may have a hidden problem that they are not aware of yet. As mentioned before it was difficult for me to notice this since I am white. This could be the problem the producers of the show do not notice. If this is the case they need to find an alternative in order to keep the show as popular as it is. By adding a diverse cast and more people of color the show may become even more of a true reality for the bachelor or bachelorette who must choose their “true love”.

16 years ago @ Race Relations Project - Native Americans: Ques... · 0 replies · +1 points

In response to the question regarding what can we do in our everyday lives to help what we have done to Native Americans in the past. Native Americans once had everything taken from them because of new people moving onto their land. This was one of the biggest genocides that have occurred to this point in history. However, it goes unnoticed very often because of what we are taught when we are younger. It is difficult to think of a way to change this back to the way things are, because it probably is not possible. This being said nothing we do may ever fully give Native Americans an even playing field because of the past. However, there are a few things that can be done to help the current situation.
A teaching assistant in Sam’s class added a little viewpoint on this and he said the main thing we can do is to educate people. I completely agree with him and believe we need to teach young children and teens about the reality of how the United States of America became ours. How we were not the first settlers on the land, and the struggle Native Americans had with people killing and stealing their land from them. Our citizens must know the reality of why Native Americans are discriminated against and why they experience so many terrible things. If the citizens of the United States realize the cruel acts that have happened to Native Americans in the past, then maybe some things will change. We need to understand why Native Americans have become so bad off. Our history books usually leave out many details about the bad the United States has committed in the past. Instead of teaching only the good, we can benefit from learning the bad also. If we learn the wrongs our ancestors have committed we can learn form them and not make the same mistakes.
Native Americans were part of a massive genocide once the first settlers from Europe arrived here. For the majority of people to not realize and understand this is a crime in itself. Our curriculums and textbooks must teach students the reality of what happened in the past in order to learn form our mistakes. If we are not taught of the mistakes we had previously made, then this may happen again. There is not much we can do to restore the wrongs of our ancestors, but educated our youth is the main cure to the current problem. If more and more people become aware of the cruelty Native Americans have been faced with, we can grow as a country and help them integrate back into society. Education is the main fix to the problem and teachers need to begin spending more time on teaching the reality of America’s past.

16 years ago @ Race Relations Project - LGBT Class: Question Six · 0 replies · +1 points

The question, why are lesbians more accepted than gay men is a great one. I am not sure I know the exact answer, but I do have a few ideas. Before regarding the question I wanted to react on Sam’s LGBT class.
After sitting in on Sam’s class I completely agree with him that gay and lesbian marriage should be allowed. He made a very compelling argument of how and why gay people should be more accepted by society. Homosexuals are no different than straight people when you first meet them. The main difference I found between straight and gay people is their preferences. Since when do people who prefer one thing over another and become ridiculed and hated by society. I also appreciated the statistic that showed how many corporations are fully accepting of gay people. This shows the United States is taking another step in the right direction and trying to become a better place for all people. Sam made great points and really helped me realize how gay people are no different than anyone else.
Now going back to the question on why lesbians are more accepted in society than gay men. I believe the main reason for this is because America is a male dominated society. Men have the image of being strong and powerful. This is the complete opposite of how gay men are viewed by society. The stereotype for a gay man is flamboyant, fairy, emotional, and in a sense “girly”. These stereotypes bring down how men want to be viewed and therefore many are neglected by straight guys. Going along with that men are usually more unemotional and harsher than women. With this in mind if men are against homosexuals they are more willing to speak up and tell their true feelings. Women on the other hand are more comforting to each other and do not want as much confrontation. Women are also more sexual in general than men. For a woman to show feelings of love toward anything is not as noticeable as if a man shows his true feelings toward something. Therefore for a woman to love another woman does not look the same to everyone.
Women and men are very different emotionally. I believe emotions and image is the main reason lesbians and gay men have different feelings toward them. Gay men must deal with the problem that they are “supposed” to be strong and powerful. Women are seen as sexual and loving already so lesbians are not going against any stereotypes that exist about them. Lesbians and gay men should not be looked at differently by society. Gay men and lesbians are no different than straight people besides their preferences and therefore should be accepted by society.
