I just attended EN2010 conference over the weekend and I listened to an Indian pastor on how Christians are being persecuted in their country. The story of Valerie, however, is different as she's being persecuted by her own Christian family. You're right that they are being zealous over their religion and not on God. People should realize that Christianity is not a religion but a relationship with God as stated in John 1:12: "But to all who believed him and accepted him, he gave the right to become children of God." God is a loving father, not a tyrant dictator as religion would want us to believe.
