The use of 1996 as an example here is striking and merits further examination.� As per your quibbles:

1) I agree, a postseason game isn't the best place to experiment, though in an elimination game it all hangs out.� However, no manager is going to try in the middle of the postseason to upset everything that balanced in the regular season, even if he should.

2)� Perhaps, but with the game still fresh in everyone's mind, there's less explaining to do about the game situations.� And I would also add that the highest leveraged point of that inning came with two on and no out--before Marte was brought in, him doing his job notwithstanding.

3)� Unfortunately, this is something that only those that actually have to do it will ever truly know.� A lot of it is likely self-induced, but as I have never pitched in a game, much less closed, I don't want to state things I don't know.� =)

I can see--and some have said--Girardi's close.� He understands the theory--he's brought Mo into some 8th inning situations that Torre certainly would not have done.� That said, he still needs that extra push, but NY isn't necessarily the town to start experimenting managerially, even if he should.

I see what you're saying, however you have to remember that Mariano is just one reliever--and many teams have closers who's bodies are still young enough to be able to handle the, erm, abuse.

Also, there is, of yet, no rule limiting stall tactics =)

Indeed, you do bring up a good point on when to bring Mo in.� I think in this regard you stick to something save-esque--like when the tying run reaches base, for example, and the other team's best hitters are due up.� The hard part, as you identify, is when to start warming him up, so in that regard I guess you would have to play it by ear a little.� Fortunately, the cool thing about relievers is that they don't take long to get hot.

In the end who pitches the ninth is sort of a sidebar to the main argument.� I have plenty of faith Robertson would have been able to get it done.
