The #1 and predominant cause for suicide terrorism is occupation. The key words are PREDOMINANT and SUICIDE. Not just acts of terror, nor is it the only reason. If you change our foreign policy, you remove a LARGE motivation for suicide terrorism. If we're not in the region influencing their politics and/or government - do we really think 9/11 would have happened? Probably not. It takes rather extreme and perceived hopeless situations to grow suicide terrorism and OCCUPATION is the primary cause of it.

As a gay libertarian, your story did not surprise me.

Often, gay people put so much into self-acceptance that they can go overboard.

I'll never let my orientation destroy my ability to think rationally about the principles of liberty.

Governments most important job is to defend liberty and that includes gay people.

End of discussion.

Yeah, just to make something clear. I've never said that punch line that Islam is a "religion of Peace". But more to the point that I just don't give a **** about their religion.

If we were soon attacked by a Muslim nation after withdrawal, then we'd have the moral high ground to respond and destroy the NATION that launched unecessary hostilities against us.

Just as in life we can't preemptively murder someone, and claim to be moral, we can't preemptively declare war on a nation either.

If we are more defensive and only react when someone attacks us, then have the moral high ground and complete authority to annihilate them. However, when we act preemptively as we have been, we lose all moral authority and are in fact pursuing an immoral and unjust war. This goes for Libya and Iraq.

So if you believe Muslims and their faith are so evil and destructive then let them SHOW IT. Let them elect their own leaders and form of government, let them live and die on their own ability as we stay completely out of it. The day they (their government) becomes violent and needlessly attacks us you'd actually coalesce the entire world against them and prove you right.

But in this current situation we're only attacked by individuals from within these Muslim nations, not their governments, because we prop up their governments, whom they hate. As Michael Schurer has said - we're not even their number 1 target. Their number 1 target are there OWN leaders who're (in their eyes) propped up by us.

So again, I'm not here to say that I think Islam is a religion of peace. As a gay, libertarian American I honestly say that I'd probably read the Koran and then throw it away. But when you look at the entire situation it's not entirely about their faith, nor our freedoms. And in order to make the best decisions you have to be willing to look at all the facts and then decide on the best course of action.

To say they attack us only because of their religion and because we believe in freedom is (to me) silly. For if you remove our intervention in the Middle East from the equation they'd not care about us anymore.

And if they ever did group together and attack us (as a nation) then DESTROY THEM.

Esgaroth do you advocate for a Christian war against Islam? Destroy them all? If you do, I disagree and see your mind as filthy with all manner of misunderstandings, fear and judgments about humanity. We probably disagree both politically and religiously and so we're miles apart. You're probably one of these fundamentalist Christians who lets their religion infect their politics to such a degree that you'd willingly destroy America in order to "destroy Islam". The irony is how you judge Muslims for the destruction their faith causes, yet fail to see how much death our foreign policy causes which you support for the exact same reason they support their holy war. The U.S. military has killed more Arabs through collateral damage than the terrorists could ever hope to kill. As you can see, this is all a complete and total mess with a hell of a lot of he said/she said going on. That's why I believe it's best to simplify this damn debate and just get out of the middle east and let them behead and destroy themselves if they so wish. They can live under tyranny for all I care. If they want freedom, they'll have to earn it just as we did.

I'm kind of silly though, in that I advocate for the success and survival of the United States above all else and that includes Israel. Let the "borgs" as you call them, destroy themselves if you so hate them.

In that case our interests where directly being threatened.

That's not the current case because it's OUR intervention the last 50+ years that's led to events like 9-11.

There's no need or reason for us to be in the Middle East.

SaveTheRepublic: Are you seriously suggesting that those who no promote preemptive war (which is no worse than preemptive murder) have the moral high ground? That's interesting. Could be rather hypocritical if it turns out that YOU supported the preemptive invasion of Iraq. Where'd your morals go, chief?

He said "ISLAM IS EVIL, PERIOD". So that begs the question - should we destroy everyone of that religion? If not, then what should we do?

I tend to avoid issues of morality when debating with neoconservatives such as yourselves because your beliefs that their "evil" tends to make you discard notions of morality. A good example of this is the denunciation of the just war theory and how easily you interventionist's discard it in fighting this "epic evil". I believe we must examine all moral and financial reasons when it comes to our foreign policy, least we be given to emotional tantrums that lead us dangerously down a path of insolvency. Hey.. wait a minute, that's exactly where we're going! That's weird!

The question was an honest question for anyone who posts these rather cool lists of Koran one-liners. Why do they post them? What do those lists justify? And if he's not promoting or justifying war/intervention in the middle east because of these one-liners then what's the point? It's just a question and it sounds like you don't have an answer so you come back with some bull.

I'm sure someone out there has a list of quotes that make the Bible look evil. In fact, I bet Bil Maher does. Me? I don't think any religion is evil just as I don't think any GUN is evil. It's the person behind that gun or good book. Funny how so-called conservatives can make that connection when it comes to guns but not religion, isn't it?

Oh, but hey, I'm the morally depraved right? You crack me up.

I don't agree with you on your interpretation of how evil Islam is. I've read much of the Bible and remember thinking as a kid - "God isn't very nice". The Bible, under the right circumstance can be read and used for a holy war and has.

I'm not going to say their faith has not created a primitive society, because maybe it has. But in my opinion that's just yet another reason for us to STAY OUT OF THEIR LAND and STOP intervening into their lives. Then when they strive or die, it's on them 100% and we have no blame whatsoever. If they ever pre-eminently attack us then this LIBERTARIAN would support DESTROYING THEM. But they have to act first. List all the reasons interventionists give for our involvement in the middle east.

- Oil.
- Israel.
- Stability.

Has, in any conceivable way, our wars in the middle east increased access to cheap oil? No, in fact it was at just $30 a barrel before the Iraq war.

Is Israel more or less threatened today? According to Mr. Israel himself, David Horowitz, they're "more threatened than ever". He said this in trying to attack the libertarian foreign policy, and ironically illustrated the failure of our intervention's.

Then finally, has our precense created stability? Hah, of course not. Uprisings all over the place and now our interventionist's have dragged us into a 3rd damn war, not including the 4th one in Pakistan with Iran being on the table. It'll never end.

Name every reason for our interventionist foreign policy and they've failed at each turn. Not only that, I'd argue they've made each goal, WORSE.

What should we do? Stop playing God. There's nothing more tyrannical than a person who thinks they can stop all the evil in the world. We have to have more faith and eject from the Middle East. Let them sort it out, we'll be okay. And if we someday come under attack by an actual nation, then we'll have the resources to respond. But as of now we're gonna be too spread out and too weakened to do anything because of stupid and out of control foreign policy.

I've said my thoughts on this, but it won't be accepted by all! Not everyone's ready for it. Thanks Master Candidus for your thoughtful response.

We just don't have time for b.s. I'm going to tell people exactly as it is and let the chips fall where they may. And IF you an interventionist, it does not make me a jerk to suggest you agree with Graham, McCain or Clinton. They're some of the biggest war hawks around and according to most of you it's that war hawkishness that "keeps us safe". I just think those people are incredibly dangerous fascists. We Americans can be extremely prideful but deep down we all know we're on the ropes. It's our inability to self-examine ourselves and our choices (for conservatives it's our warfare state, for progressives it's the welfare state) that's destroying us and nothing and nobody else.

What right do you have to steal my income to go to war and nation build in Iraq?

12 years ago @ Big Hollywood - Bill Maher: ‘There I... · 1 reply · -14 points

I agree Thomas. These neoconservative guys like to stick their hand in the bee hive, get stung and then yell, OMG LET'S KILL ALL BEE'S THEY STING!

Let's remove our hand from the hive and never go back again. Now if the bee's invade YOUR HOME, then you annihilate them. But I'm afraid it's a bit of a lost cause here. Many of them have spent YEARS arguing and defending a certain point of view, they can't just change now. I know, I used to be a neoconservative and supported the Iraq war.

Now I hate that war. Total waste, unAmerican and not at all in our interests.
