I am very sure that the date this photo was taken can be instantly verified by all of those armchair marines out there who know everything about war except coming home with limbs missing. I therefore challenge any of you to show your mettle and tell me, a peaceful old duffer fortunately being born in a country where war is frowned upon., when this photo was taken. If the miltary had their way, they would still lose wars. Their soldiers are simply not cut out to be monsters that you seem to want. They are brought up to be decent civilized people, get to do a bit of killing while hoping not to get killed or maimed for god and country and then return home for turkey dinners with ma, pa and probably some invited poor person brought in to share the bounty with.

I like that about america. I am sure however that the United States cannot avoid getting involved in these dirty little wars. Their honour demands this as does their conscience. I see this need distilled into something palatable to the voting politicians, i.e., the grand strategy of FDR where war acts are linked to national interest, but I also see in these things an underlying need for America and the boys and girls fighting these horrible little wars, to do something good.

This is why I think that people like me who are not americans but love the ideals of the american way founded as it is in liberty and decency, are so shocked when we see this sort of display. We might expect this from others, but not the yanks, proud as they are of their non imperial nature. Bill is just trying to be a tough guy. The sort who would make a joke at an autopsy or death scene. These men tend to be the most cowardly I have seen in my many years as a policeman.
