Thanks for the reply. This was my first guess, too, but restarting, even a hard reboot, didn't fix the tiles or connection issue. I'm still experimenting, but it seems that fresh restore and JB has been able to fix it.

After JB with Absinthe-2.0.1, I have noticed a strange issue where the AppStore and iTunes won't connect and some of the tiles appear white. Even once the Maps tile was white and wouldn't launch. (Absinthe-2.0.1-Mac, observed on three devices: iPad3, iPad1, iPhone4). I suppose this could be connected to some Cydia packages causing a conflict, but I haven't not been able to trace it down precisely.

Anyone else experiencing this?

Maybe your hosts file is pointing to Cydia? Use TU to repoint to Apple.

Thanks for the fast reply. So just to be safe, the best option is to use pwnage tool to create custom 4.2.1, then start up TU, then use option-restore in iTunes.

If I understand correctly, it seems that pwnage tool modifies the hosts file and points iTunes to Saurik's server. Will TU override this?

Quick question, just to double check:

I have an iPhone-4 with iOS 4.0 and BB 1.59 and the phone depends on ultrasn0w. TU has SHSHs saved for 4.2.1 and 4.3.3. I would like to try upgrading from 4.0 to 4.2.1.

Is it necessary to first create a custom ipsw with pwnage tool, then start the TU server and use restore?

Or is it safe to use stock (unmodified) firmware plus TU server preserve baseband? The instructions at iClarified suggest that unmodified FW and TU will not update baseband (for iPhone 4).

Successful rc15 on iPad (64gb 3g) iOS 4.3.3 after stock FW upgrade on Mac OSX 10.6.7. Everything ran clean and smooth. A few Cydia packages wouldn't update upon the first try, but the next day I had no trouble getting everything installed.

Multitouch gestures (via plist mod) even seem to work much better on the iPad than on iPhone.

As I understand, the 3gs and 4 both require saved SHSH to downgrade, but the 1st gen and 3g do not. I had no trouble downgrading a phone in your situation (it was a while ago that I did it, though).

Just to echo what others have said, I would suggest to downgrade your 3g to 3.1.3. If I recall, I had some trouble downgrading to a custom 3.1.3 FW. It seems the solution for me was to downgrade to stock 3.0 FW and then to upgrade to a custom 3.1.3 FW. There are many good instructions out there on this process.
