Explore loan audits and of course you can try a loan modification. You DO NOT have to be behind to get a loan modification believe me I work with attorneys that do them all the time. Auditing is much less expensive and is done by an attorney as well. When dealing with these lenders a reputable attorney is what you need. Audits will find mistakes in your note which gives you much more power with the lender to reduce rates and principal and make other changes.
