I have a 3G running 4.2.1, BB 05.13.04 (JB with pwnagetool). I didn't enable multitasking with 4.2.1. I have read on some discussion boards that there is a problem with the springboard crashing when multitasking on the 3G. Instead, I used Backgrounder from cydia which is updated to 4.2.1. It's much easier to know what is running and to control the processes. I also just discovered SBSettings. It's great to monitor available memory and processes. My 3G is running as quickly as it did on 3.1.2. I was on 4.0.1 and was suffering with the slow speed. It's like having a new iPhone again!

I'm planning to create a custom ipsw for my iPhone 3g OS 4.0 BB 5.13.04 (jailbroken using redsn0w and unlocked) on a friend's MAC. Should I then continue with the jailbreak on the MAC? Or, can I use the custom ipsw to jailbreak on my Windows machine? Can I just restore in iTunes after putting my iphone in DFU mode? Thanks for any help.

The 3G on 4.0 is painfully slow. From reading various post, 4.2.1 is much better and since I don't have to update the BB to 6.15, I think it's worth a try. I believe I could go back to 3.1.2 or 3.1.3 if things go drastically wrong. I'd be interested in hearing about others with 3G on 4.2.1 (non-BB 6.15).

Any other comments? I've jailbroken twice with redsn0w. Never with pwangetool.

I have a 3G OS 4.0 BB 5.13.04. It is jailbroken and unlocked using redsn0w windows and ultrasn0w.. I'm planning to use pwangetool on a borrowed MAC to update to 4.2.1 and keep 5.13.04, then unlock with ultrasn0w. I've read the iClarified tutorials. It doesn't seem to indicate that I'll need to use redsn0w. But some things I've read here suggest that after creating the custom firmware with pwangetool that I need redsn0w to jailbreak. Can someone confirm this or clarify? I have no SHSH saved. Will this be a problem? Anything else I'm missing? Thanks for any help.

I have 3g 4.0.0 BB 5.13.04. JB/Unlocked to t-mobile. The phone is incredibly slow compared to OS 3.1.2. (A hard reset in 4.0.0 helps for a short time.) Were you also slow on 4.0.0? Are you using multitasking? I'm trying to decide if I want to update to 4.2.1 (preserving 5.13.04). Would appreciate your comments. Thanks.

Did you create a custom IPSW with an older, unlockable baseband like I'm planning? Just curious about any trouble I might encounter. Thanks for your reply.

I have a 3g 4.0 baseband 05.13.04. I jailbroke using redsn0w and ultrasn0w unlock on Windows. The 3g has run painfully slow since. If I borrow a friend's Mac, can I use PwnageTool to create a custom IPSW 4.2.1 and retain 05.13.04 then jailbrake and unlock on the Mac? Anybody else done this? How is the 3g speed? Is there a problem going from Windows redsn0w to Mac PwnageTool like this? Thanks for any help.

I did exactly that with a 3G. After redsn0w runs, I get to the redsn0w window that says, "Please wait while your devices is being processed. Waiting for reboot." iTunes is then started and a pop-up appears that says, "iTunes must check the iPhone softward update to identify this device." If I just wait (30 minutes), nothing happens. If I click the "check" button, it takes me to the iTunes restore page. It then says iPhone is in recovery mode. Please help.

Had a 3G iphone jailbroken on 3.0. I used the iClarified 4.0 ipsw to restore then attempt to jailbreak with redsnow. I ended up in "emergency call" mode and could not access my iPhone on iTunes. I borrowed a friend's ATT sim card and activated the phone. It showed that I had firmware 4.0(8A293) and baseband 5.13.04. When I attempted to jailbreak, the phone stalled at the last step in Redsnow. iTunes started with a message box saying "iTunes must check the iPhone software update server to identify this device." Any advise about what to do? Am I without hope? Thanks for any help.

I started redsnow. The only ipsw it would accept was 4.0. I followed the instructions. Redsnow said done and that the rest of the work would happen on the iPhone. My screen stays blank for 10 minutes. If i turn my phone off then on, i only go to emergency call mode. I'm on t-mobile so I don't have an officially activated sim card.

Tried to jailbreak 3G 3.0 baseband 4.26.08 using redsn0w. First attempt got error code13 from itunes. I then restored my iPhone to 3.12 using an ipsw from iClarified. I then tried to jailbreak again. Redsn0w would not accept the 3.12 ipsw. It did accept the 4.0 ipsw. Redsn0w then went all the way through the jailbreak, said done. But my iPhone never rebooted. It now only turns on in Emergency Call mode. What can I do?
