Hey, Jessica! Thanks for stopping by and leaving a comment. I think that Jamaican cuisine is the closest to Haitian, but even they use some spices in their rice and beans that we don't. I love jerk chicken, though. We don't have anything like it so I think it eliminated the issue of "this isn't supposed to taste like this" :-) The one dish that I have yet to see duplicated is diri ak djonjon (rice and mushrooms).

As you should ;-) At least until they're on their own.

I've only seen this amongst the elderly. I have been offered help when with the children without asking - that was also surprising. I definitely think it's cultural, but that culture had to come from somewhere. Since they have so many laws to protect them, I assume it came from the top. There are also PSA's all over the place encouraging people to make seniors (and the disabled) a priority. Did you see things like that in the UK?

Great points! Do you think part of the problem with islanders/Africans organizing themselves is language related?

You know, I've been trying to think of what would good immigration reform look like and have not had any success. I keep thinking that if countries decided to give legal status to all those already in the country, it would not do much to deter those who are trying to enter illegally. The other way to look at it is to help (I mean really help) poorer countries so that the reasons people risk their lives to leave become a non-issue. That is the least likely solution to happen though :-(

Hey, Joy! I'm glad you found me ;-) Yes, I think there is a myriad of reasons why people in the States avoid helping each other out. While there are some people out to do harm, it's sad that someone who has lived 70 years and beyond should hold so much fear when it comes to asking for help.
