I think tweetdeck is a little bit much, I'm giving Twhirl a try today. I still don't really like the separate app quite yet

True, but alt text is generally pretty short compared to most captions. You have to make sure you don't make them too long

I'd wrap it all in a div and set the caption paragraph margin-top to something like -80px;
