The quotes completely negate the fact that the country was founded on "christian principles". These are quotes from the founding fathers within the context of the role of religion in government. It is not a fact that the country was founded on said principles, it is an assertion. Whatever american history class you took was much different than the one i took. Further more the term "christian principles" means what ever you want it to mean. the term is subjective. Christian Principles change from century to century and pulpit to pulpit. for example reincarnation was a christian principle up until 927 ad. During the inquisition it was a christian principle to save the sinner by eliminating the sin via torture and death. I could go on. This country was not even founded on ethics, perhaps this so called " Christian Principles without religion " of which you speak. Our system of government was founded on a system invented by the Greeks, unsightly pagans they were...and perfected by the French, freedom fry lovers that they were. Lastly, it is a completely necessary point because people believe that our nation is a christian nation. its not true. not at the beginning, and not now. Freedom of Religion means every religion, or even the abscence of one.

the founding fathers were not really big fans of religion, particularly christianity and especially when relating to government: "History, I believe, furnishes no example of a priest-ridden people maintaining a free civil government. This marks the lowest grade of ignorance, of which their political as well as religious leaders will always avail themselves for their own purpose." --- Thomas Jefferson to Baron von Humboldt, 1813 It is a doctrine not only dangerous to morals in this world, but to our happiness in the next world, because it holds out such a cheap, easy, and lazy way of getting to heaven, as has a tendency to induce men to hug the delusion of it to their own injury.-Thomas Paine "What influence, in fact, have ecclesiastical establishments had on society? In some instances they have been seen to erect a spiritual tyranny on the ruins of the civil authority; on many instances they have been seen upholding the thrones of political tyranny; in no instance have they been the guardians of the liberties of the people. Rulers who wish to subvert the public liberty may have found an established clergy convenient auxiliaries. A just government, instituted to secure and perpetuate it, needs them not." --- James Madison, "A Memorial and Remonstrance", 1785

I wish he was a socialist! people that make this claim really have no idea what socialism is. In truth, he is a centrist president. The tag of socialism is a scare tactic used by Fox News and conservative talk radio to incite fear among ignorant, fearful white people. Let me spell it out for you, Rhetoric. it sells ad space.
