Paul Kedrosky: Infectious Greed : That China Parenting Article

My FB friend Mimi Chen said : I resent this woman's arrogance that she thinks she can speak for all Chinese mothers. My mom was completely different. Her main concern was just that I have a good piano teacher and that was it. I did everything myself." I lost my mom when I was young, and I was terrified of my dad. Asian parents don't try to be friends with their kids. Don't know if Chua's way (or my dad's way) is better. Kids may achieve, but they fear their parents. It's a very different relationship compared to Western kids and their parents. Maybe it's the rice culture, the evolution from growing rice to survive. It's back breaking, long days of work, so Asians apply that work ethic to education and everything. Generally, Asian American parents can't be as strict here, kids don't go for it.

Paul Kedrosky: Infectious Greed : Having the Soundest Banks is for Weenies

i'm not sure Glass Steagall would prevent this crisis. AIG was an insurance company, and TBTF failed is the links among them with CDS. It was the investment banks that seemed to trigger the crisis, Bear Stearns first. Then Lehman going under froze the financial system with commercial paper, money markets. They let big commercial banks, thrifts like Wachovia and WaMu go under. Sound = boring ? Regulating derivatives would help, requiring writers to CDS to have enough collateral to cover the contract, under of being naked like AIG.

Paul Kedrosky: Infectious Greed : Tiger Woods Won't Win 19 Majors

Tiger has everything to prove. He's been targeting Nicklaus' majors record since he was a teenager. He is the best at scrambling from the rough. He will too from his private monkey business. I can't believe he's 34. I remember him winning the Master's at 19 like yesterday. Tiger is built to play golf, if he doesn't play he will lose his purpose. He's not going into coaching. Athletes like Tiger don't end up as coaches.

well the idea of going to war is you loot the wealth of the loser, a simple idea from Sun Tzu in a little book called the Art of War. every thing need to know about war is in it. apparently no one the dubya WH read it. you don't go into debt by going to war, you increase your wealth. (i guess the Iraqi oil that we're not profiting from) we could abandon china after winning the war, but then who would manufacture all of our Nike shoes and other cheap crap for us?

i'm (half) kidding. we may erase the debt, then own China's main problem, billions and billions of peeps looking for work -- instead of millions here. we ought to build a forbidden city like ordos in the US for the bankers to live, spur GDP growth, since we already gave our overlords trillions. or as someone said at TBP, we could answer the phone when China calls, "um, what money? i don't know what you're talking about. i think you have the wrong number. goodbye." but a war would put all of those u-6s to work.
