Well, they met the fanbase part way. I'm neutral on it. I don't think Square or Sony could justify the cost of a full blown remake. And not just a better graphical overhaul than the steam/pc port this is. The static backgrounds wouldn't be too much of a cost, but redoing all of the character models, animations, recoding the whole thing up to today's gaming standards would be prohibitively expensive. To add to that the game's battle system, although good, is 17 years old. Unless they only planned to sell the game to the FF7 fans that have been clamoring for it they would have had to done something to modernize the battle system to appeal to current market. Would today's more casual, action game player who's never played an old style jrpg be all that interested in the gameplay? I don't know, but I'd say not. It drew in the casuals during the PS1 era by showing nothing but cgi cut scenes in its advertising. Would today's casual market buy it on hype alone. Maybe, most people who bought PS4s have bought it on hype alone. I'm not getting much use out of mine.

I think they did what was right, may not be entirely what people want. But, neither Sony or Square are doing well enough financially to finance a full blown remake. They're not only in a pickle financially, though. How much would they have to do to get it to sell the units to recoup that cost. If it would just be a graphical overhaul, could they sell enough units to cover the cost? If they messed with/sped up the gameplay, would that piss off the long time fans? Won't get the answers to these at least in this generation. I still think they did the right thing. 'Gamers' find something to complain about, even if it's insignifcant.

You could have save everyone who commented on this thread by just mentioning that the source of the video wasn't listed. I'm sure we all have bloggers, vloggers, journalists that we don't like, but you don't see us acting like children because we were 'supposedly tricked' in to something from someone we don't like. I'm not saying you don't have the right to not like Jim's content or not. But we're all responsible for our own actions. This action by you seems to have, in some way, irked tlh. She being a contributor to the site seems to have felt the need to come to the defense of Francis. Anytime you post something whether it's related to the article or not, you open yourself up to criticism. I for one think that you were being small minded in this instance. You're on of the top commenters here seem to be quite popular, but this is Francis's site and well, he may run a pretty good site, but he's not a professional and even if he were, the big sites make guffaws, too. This isn't even a guffaw, maybe an oversight. Doubt that, as long as he credits his source he's in the clear.

Don't think that I'm attacking you on this, I'm not. But you do come off as offended for no good reason. Francis and his contributors write articles, link other articles and videos because he/they think the community might find them interesting. Not everyone is going to like every article on here. I come to the site often, I don't comment often. I do read articles and comments sections on article I find interesting. I'm not going to complain if Francis or any of his contributors post something that I don't like. He has a nice site here, with thoughtful and enthusiastic contributors and commenters. He does a great job of it. And because he does there are plenty of new stories for us to read and comment on. There are always going to be disagreements, it was just bad form on your part to complain on something so insignificant.

Good to see they're selling so well. This could be good or bad for Nintendo, though. Haven't seen any comments about them limiting supply to make an artificial demand, yet. Fanboys of various types will find anything to complain about. It's good that they're selling and are in demand. If they sell enough of them it may bode well for seeing Gamecube games on the virtual console. Have been playing SSB4WU a lot since launch, can't say that I'm great at it but it's so much fun. Played 8 player Smash with 3 computer controlled characters...epically chaotic fun. Really glad I invested in a console that has such local multiplayer games. Much better to play with people and share your accomplishments and/or failures in the same room than to yelled or be yell at by someone you may not even know online. Not saying that online doesn't have its place, but, to me at least, local is the most fun, you can see the facial reactions, boast of your accomplishment or accept your defeat in person.

This may just well become the norm for publishers. If it does I feel very sorry for the consumers. Not that all reviews are trustworthy, but a review will at least give you some semblance of what the reviewer thought of the game if you read the review instead of just looking at the number. If this becomes the norm for publishers not wanting to have their games criticized before release it will just be one more of a worrying number of problems that have surfaced within the last few generations. The short list would be day one patches, day one dlc, developers being underpaid and rushed for services rendered (ie coding, artwork, assets) (bonuses withheld if the game doesn't sell enough copies)... If the industry doesn't check itself I foresee more developers closing, fans becoming disenfranchised, more publishers tarnishing their increasingly negative reputations. Say what you will about Nintendo in the 8 bit and the beginning of the 16 bit era but there was some sort of quality control.

Publishers are either too scared of their shareholders or have no idea what their doing when it comes to making quality products anymore. Release betas, get rid of quality control departments. Rush developers to make deadlines, ship game out the door whether broken or not, attach band aids via patch for awhile to see if that fixes the majority of the issues. If multiples patches don't fix it say fuck it we're done we got the suckers to buy or piece of shit. Start new game, rinse, repeat.

Contraction of the industry or a total crash will be the result if Ubi, Ea, Square and various other devs don't start releasing quality products again soon. If I were Sony and Microsoft I'd start bitching at these publishers to start make finished product. I didn't mention Nintendo because other than a few minor glitches here and there their games are finished and highly polished. If the market crashes again I'm almost certain they'll have to be the ones to bail out this industry, like they did in the late 80s, again.

Online wasn't available for reviews is what I've been reading. Say that's to be patched in tomorrow.

Actually I think part of that casual crowd have PS4s and or Xbox Ones. They were all about the novelty of motion controls and got a Wii for that, but since there was so much shovel ware heaped on to the Wii by the 3rd parties they left for PS3 or Xbox 360. Were still casual in that they played what was popular and didn't have much of a learning curve. They became part of the group that buys the yearly FIFA, Madden, COD etc., and are the ones that will, every once in awhile, go pick up other very popular games: GTA and maybe Saints Row.

WEll, um, gamers haven't always been lemmings. At one time gaming was very niche. We relied on credible review scores, word of mouth from gaming friends we trusted and credible magazines. Over the years due to the growth of gaming and its profitability it lured in fat cats from other industries and they brought in their ad departments, used their wealth and power to bully video game magazines and later websites to get their way in the industry. They started the bullshots, later running games at conventions on high end rigs instead of the actual console hardware, paid off or coerced video game websites, released commercials for games that used mostly the cinematics...long story short, this lemming like attitude that 'gamers' have today was cultivated by various manufacturers, game publishers, publications (print and digital), trade shows and various other machinations of the aforementioned entities. Gamers used to be more shrewd, of course, they weren't having the wool pulled over their eyes by the majority of those in the industry like most gamers are now.

I feel that if things don't change that there will either be a crash or a massive contraction of the industry. Publishers need to stop acting like high rollers in Las Vegas and get their budgets under control. I'm sure there are a lot of publishers, not just developers, that are just one big flop from becoming the next THQ.

I don't know why anyone would be surprised by these Sony executives talking up a system manufactured and sold by the company they work for. If anyone expects them to say, 'Oh, we have this system with a much smaller catalog of games than our competition, expensive proprietary memory cards and about as much buzz as expired sour cream but, we still think it's a better value and should snap it up right now.' they're delusional. I haven't played one, not interested. Why am I not interested? Lack of games that appeal to me. Overpriced memory cards and well, I'm not much of a handheld gamer and I really don't feel the need to play a console game on the Vita when I could play the same game on my big screen. Talking about the remote play feature. I have the PS4, Xbox One and the Wii U. The only system that I can honestly say was worth the purchase price at this point is the Wii U. When the PS4 and Xbox One have games that I like to play they'll get more play time. That's looking like a big if at this point. I couldn't care less about sandbox games, FPS or overly cinematic, long winded, poorly written want to be movies. Sony can keep their PR crap. If they get enough compelling games on their system it will sell. Just ironic that, for the most part, the PS4, has a very limited quantity of high quality, fun games and it's selling like hot cakes. 'Gamers' today have either lost their minds or are just lemmings following what is trendy.

Whether this is an eshop title or a retail release they already have at least one sale for this. Splatoon and Project Giant Robot are all my nephew is talking about.

Got the Windwaker HD as my free game. Quite enjoyable thus far. Not the biggest Zelda fan. Only previous one that I <nobr><a id="FALINK_3_0_2" class="FAtxtL" href="#">completed</nobr> was A Link to the Past and that was one of my favorite games on the Snes. Already had NSMBU and Pikmin 3 and wasn't interested in Wii Party U. Good to see that the promotion helped to move consoles worldwide and get at least one more quality title in the hands of Wii U gamers.

Having frequented various sites I'm tired of seeing articles about what can save the Wii U, what five games need to be announced at E3 and the like to want to vomit. The Wii U doesn't need saving, it will be fine even if it only has Gamecube level lifetime sells Nintendo will be profitable and more importantly those who have and will get the system in the future will have quite a few quality titles coming from Nintendo and whatever partnerships they form similar to Hyrule Warriors.

It's also good to see Child of Light there and some Indie games. It bodes well for the future of indie support for the Wii U and maybe seeing decent sells of Child of Light will get Ubisoft to port similar titles to the Wii U in the future.

If we see similar results for the Mario Kart 8 bundle free game offer in the coming weeks it will bode well for the for future titles hitting the system. I'm not saying that the U is going to magically start selling like crazy, but if it gets to a certain level install base it will be hard for the 3rd parties to justify not putting their games on the U. Up to this point the majority of the 3rd parties that didn't abandon ship before or shortly after launch haven't put for the right amount of effort or held back certain features that made the Wii U version less appealing thus making the Wii U itself less appealing. If Nintendo has a good showing at E3 and can <nobr><a id="FALINK_4_0_3" class="FAtxtL" href="#">continue</nobr> to put out quality software things will look much better for the Wii U this time next year. I'm happy with my purchase, it's by far the most played current gen system. The Xbox One hasn't been on since the first DLC dropped and the PS4 was on for all of an hour the day Watch Dogs launched. The system that gets the most play in the house though is the PS3. That's because my niece can't get enough of Little Big Planet 2. The Wii U took over the tv in the living room upon the launch of MK8. I don't think it will be leaving from there anytime soon.
