The Devil's Avocado : Lists! Top five moments in television history

Didn't realize you such a big howdy doody fan. Where to begin? Hrm... Nothing from M*A*S*H? Nothing from Cheers? Not the Fonz jumping the shark? Nothing from HBO? Not the interracial kiss on Star Trek? Not Ellen coming out? Not JR getting shot on Dallas, or that dream-ending thing? Not Jack friggin' Ruby shooting and killing Lee Harvey Oswald on live TV? 24, Grey's Anatomy and Jordan Catalano?

The Devil's Avocado : Lists! Best Summer Movies

Oh, but I thought of American Graffiti. I chose Dazed and Confused over it, because they are both nostalgic high school films, and I'm just more partial to the 70s than the 50s. That fake nostalgia of which Janine spoke (above) is the same I get when watching Dazed and Confused, but is oddly absent when I watch American Graffiti. I'm also a little scared of George Lucas. I'm afraid if I put it on the list, he'll remake it, or add a prequel or sequel with commies or CGI students, then you have American Graffiti action figures, video games, lunch boxes (do kids still have lunch boxes, or is it a strictly hipster business now?)

Unfortunately, I don't have an answer for the quality of your posts, though. Annie Hall? Where's the visceral feeling? So, Heavyweights and Camp Nowhere are better than Caddyshack? How about the "BEST" baseball movie, Bull Durham?

I was there with Rob and indeed there was a pretty large clan of us all. If I can recall, it was either Rob's or my decision for the group to see the movie, and there were many harumphs when no one but us liked it (so they say. I can recall a whole lot of guffaws while we were in the dark). Their loss, it rocked then and still does now.

Well, I suppose I can forgive that since Jaws is in almost every other TDA list. Can I just say that I love that you can't hear the name Sebastian screams at the end of "The Never Ending Story"?

Yeah, there were quite of few movies I had to leave off the list. "One Crazy Summer" was one of them, unfortunately. I think it's just been too long since I've seen it, and not nearly enough times before then. If I had a list of the best John Cusack summer movies, that movie just might top the list. As for "The Great Outdoors", it was one of my last minute additions. It just kinda dawned on me when I was finishing up and getting ready to post. I just couldn't leave it off (too bad for "Summer School").

I'm not a Star Trek fan either, but I liked this movie. I didn't like the two Spocks and the time travelling nonsense either. I understand they had to somehow explain to all of the trekkies out there how things were gonna change, but it seems everytime the Star Trek franchise is in need of some plot tool or shortcut, BAM, time travel. Pretty lazy, Abrams.

The Devil's Avocado : Leak of

The main difference between music and movies is that a business model now exists where there is none for the studios. Music companies are engaging in more "360" deals where, they take a percentage of all of the artists income--concerts, iTunes, commercials, etc. This can make up for their loss in CD sales to a degree. Without "concerts", the film business is in real danger of losing their revenue stream unless they can create franchises that can be merchandised, like Iron Man, or Wolverine. It makes it nearly impossible for independent films that don't lend themselves to action figures or cereal boxes to turn a profit. Simultaneous release hasn't really worked yet. It isn't widely accepted by filmmakers either. Another theory for cutting out distribution costs is the use of satellite transmitted digital projectors, and eliminating the need for prints. This is comparable to building a nuclear power plant, where the up-front costs are astronomical, but the long-term costs diminish greatly. So, while movie leakages aren't nearly the problem that music leakages are, yet, the music industry is better equipped to deal with the problem as it grows. We can only assume that it will grow.

The Devil's Avocado : Leak of

The problem is that no business model exists where studios or filmmakers can make any money if their projects are constantly leaked onto the interwebs. It isn't like music where you can just go on tour and make your money the old fashion way.
