There was a story from NKU a couple of weeks ago where some grad assistants under the AD stole meal vouchers worth several hundred dollars and nothing was done from a criminal standpoint because the matter was handled internally as a personnel issue. I know that it's sort of a different situation, but in both cases the students are being essentially compensated for their "work" for the athletic depts. It's completely speculative, but maybe that has something to do with it. I think the Cards have so many other tools that being rid of Puljols and his big dollar contract will make them better than keeping him. It's like the argument Doc always makes against signing DatDude for big dollars: he's on the downward rather than the upward slope of his career. You have to think that with the money that the Cards will keep if Miami is ignorant enough actually to do that deal with Albert they will punish the Reds far more than what they would have with him at 1B. I kind of wonder about the greed of sports stars and what I would feel in their position. From my side, if I like a team and I've already made bookoo bucks off of them, I will stick with them instead of pursuing crazy amounts of money in a new place where folks might not like me as much or the prospect of winning isn't as great. If I'm Puljols (of course without the experience of being an elite baseball talent in a market based on astronomical amounts of money) I don't consider going to the Marlins at all if the Cards give me enough to retire on and with which to get my kids through college.
