well you could install ios 4 on it and no it don't mean you can't ever jailbreak it since new iphone 4g are in same situation so when the jailbreak for iphone 4g comes that 3gs with ios 4 will be jailbreak abel too. but i would keep it at 3.1.3 jailbroken and wait till tools come to upgrade to ios 4.0

have you saved your shsh for 3.1.2 (its too late now if you havnt) other then that your good to go unless you want to backup app store apps as well on itune and get yourself bag of popcorn and drink sit back and watch pwnage tool at work :)

yes its safe to upgrade only time its not is if you have original 3.1.3 installed and you try to jailbreak with spirit while 9.2 is installed on that computer other then that it don't matter

they can be saved using tinyumbrella its a software that works are middel man between you and apple and then capture what apple responds with
shsh are like signature files for your iphone for that fw you have installed shsh changes each time you install dif firmware on your phone if you have 3.1.3 your shsh will be diffrecnt for same phone when you go to 4.0
each time you upgrade or restore itune sends your phone info to apple and apple sends ok signel back with shsh that its ok to upgrade without shsh you cannot upgrade or downgrade thats why shsh are important
