Basimmousilli.com : It's a girl! Announcing our 1st baby

Vic, as soon as I decided to step foot out of America I got swooped up by an engineering force that sends people around the world to do high tech IT installations and since then I have settled in Brunei. Then I got married and now I've been in Brunei and who knew this country -- whose name I initially thought referred to a place in Africa -- would bear my wife and children and 3 years of my life. Each turn of the road we take in life affects us for the rest of our lives, it seems. I am very happy here but miss America and need to get back soon. We all cling to our younger days and values. I still play Xbox when I can steal away and get obsessed with child-like things, computers, soccer, etc. I'm consulting for Shell as my client in Brunei.

Vic, thanks for the comments. It is quite shocking because I just picked up and left. I don't usually do crazy things like that. It is quite exotic here...completely different that what you would expect in the States. Thank you for the congratulations and so that means I guess you're next! I am currently consulting for Brunei Shell Petroleum as a Digital Oilfield Consultant. See this article for details on my work: http://www.basimmousilli.com/2010/11/i-am-a-digit...

Chin, I appreciate your comment. It is going to be a very different life for me, especially since I'm so selfish with my time. Things are great with me. Still living in Brunei. Are you in Abuja or LA now or somewhere else in the world? I am laughing because I remember how blunt and honest you were when I was working with you in Nigeria...it was refreshing. Remember the ridiculous things we were told to do?

Morgan, thank you for your comments. First of all, I am really sorry I did not know the meaning of gook. I just looked it up and I admit it was very insulting. I have changed that derogatory term. With regard to your point, I know about foreign policy and what happened in Vietnam thank you for referencing that. I completely agree with you on that point. What the Americans did in Vietnam and what they are doing in countries around the world imposing manifest destiny down people's throats is disgusting. Regardless, whatever happened in the past, that is no way to treat tourists entering the country. I am from the Middle East. Would it be nice for me to treat Americans like crap entering my country? No. While this behavior is understandable, it is not acceptable. Hate does not breed understanding and reform. In general, my apologies for anyone having read this that takes offense; what I am trying to highlight is the current state of Vietnam on Americans. Maybe this post will make some people wake up to why America is being viewed the way it is. I wish things would get better in the world between the US and other countries being stepped on by US foreign policy. This post highlights the way it was for me entering Vietnam. It's the truth and I don't want to hide it. I don't support the Vietnam War, for the record. I understand what Americans did was wrong. But this is not the way to treat tourists coming into the country to learn more about it and understand the people, while spending money to support the economy through tourism. The hostility I faced was a magnificent eye opener and I am grateful it happened to force me to think why it happened and to share with the world what some people think about Americans in Vietnam.
