Actually, MAAG-Vietnam had been in Vietnam since 1960. When I arrived in 1963, there were ONLY 10,000 total Americans (including wives and dependent children) in the whole country. In 1964, MAAG became MACV, adding perhaps 50,000. In the Summer of 1965, LBJ's push to 500,000 started.
