First of all thank you all for the help you can give me. I have an iPhone 3GS 16gb, in firmware 3.1.2 with BB 04.26.08. I installed PDANet, and now my iPhone wont boot, it's stuck in the apple logo. My problem is, I have a lot of pictures I took in a trip I just arrived from that i haven't backed up to my PC stuck in my iPhone. I can enter recovery mode, but I have no way of accessing the filesystem. So the question is, is there a way to recover those pictures?? Thank you in advance for your help.

Does anybody know a free program for windows or mac in which I can backup my music and photos previous to restore? I'm at a friends place, and he is lending me his mac to do the upgrade, but as I need to restore my iPhone to install the custom IPSW, all my music and pictures will be deleted. I am going home in 2 weeks, and I don't want to be without my music until then. Thank you.

ONLY if it's an iPhone 2G, the one with the metallic back part, restore to the apple official 3.1.2, then when presented with the emergency call screen, create the custom FW again, enter DFU mode, and restore to the custom IPSW. Remember, only do it if it's a 2G iPhone, on a 3G or 3GS this will permanently lock your iPhone.

Just downgrade the phone back to 3.0.1 and use redsn0w to unlock and JB. Also you can restore to custom 3.1 IPSW. As it is a 2G iPhone, you can downgrade or restore to whatever you want.

When you run Pwnagetool, it will create a custom firmware file, make sure you choose to activate or not depending on your carrier, this is done by choosing expert mode on the top. If you are using an official carrier like at&t, don't select the option to activate. This process doesn't touch your iPhone, it just creates a FW you can use to JB it. Once you're at home, put your iPhone into recovery mode by turning it off, then keep holding the home button and plug it in. You should now see the connect to iTunes screen in your iPhone. Then in iTunes Shift-Click restore and select the custom firmware you previously made. Afterwards wait for the magic to be done. Once finished, restore from your backup to have your info back.

Yes, you have to use a pwnagetool made IPSW, enter recovery mode in your iPhone (the onee where you see the connect to iTunes screen), then Shift-Click Restore and choose your custom IPSW.

Don't worry, there are tools coming from the dev-team, geohot, and chronic-dev to jailbreak 3.1 without being previously pwned, the only problem is that you won't be able to unlock.
