I completely agree with #4.

I know people who are outspoken Christians who I cannot have a conversation about religion with because their approach is so hateful (dude, I guarantee "you're going to hell" is never going to convince me - this is approximately as effective as telling me I am banished to Candyland) and I know people who are outspoken Christians who are some of the most loving, kind and intellectually curious people I've ever met. It's not about how they identify (across the board as Christians), it's about how they act toward others.

And I'm an atheist, so I get my fair share of the Mikey effect, albeit in a different way :)

Braveheart felt like complete self-indulgence, and have no interest in the Passion because I assume it's got to be twice as bad on that front.

Lethal Weapon is kind of fun(ish). He's sort of a scenary chewer. But, yeah, hopefully he gets his stuff together.

And there is nothing less charitable, in my mind, then forcing them to take God to get food.

Oh, yes, I love President Bartlett.

Amen, Aydan. This is why a group of Catholic priests and nuns supported the healthcare bill - they'd seen women say, time and again, "I'm having an abortion because I can't afford to take myself to the doctor, or to take the baby to the doctor once its born, even if you will give me free pre-natal care. And I certainly can't afford a hospital birth."

What about instances where there are severe birth defects, like anencephaly? The pregnancy doesn't threaten the mother's life, but the fetus will not survive. She should be forced to carry a dying baby for months on end? Is that compassion or love?

The 9th amendment comes into play here. I would also say that the Judeo-Christian basis for the nation is false - if anything, it relies heavily on Roman government structure. Decidedly un-Christian, that.

You may recall that Joshua killed women (including those who were pregnant), children and babies at Jericho.

I am interested in this oft-quoted "conservatives give more" number. Is it true if you take out tithing/general donations to religious institutions that are not otherwise charitable (e.g., paying a minister's salary, not funding a well in sub-Saharan Africa)?

Michael, I so agree. I was so appalled by that - mocking the ill for their political beliefs? What kind of a human being does that?
