Open your eyes to Tim Scott instead of indulging silly old prejudices that invoke the past.

"Black Republicans offer hope after Barack Obamas failures on race."

Campaigning a few miles from Fort Sumter, where the first shots of the Civil War were fired in 1861, Tim Scott described last week how he was born into poverty and a broken home, much like Barack Obama.....When he was 15, a man who ran a Chick-fil-A fast-food restaurant taught him "that there was a way to think my way out of the worst conditions". Scott went on to became a small businessman and a proud "conservative Republican".Barring a cataclysmic upset, Scott will be elected to Congress on November 2nd. There, he will be a ferocious opponent of Obama, to whom he gives a withering "failing grade" for his presidency. Scott will be the first black Republican congressman from the Deep South in more than a century.

French hip hop comes from the banlieues. "The political and social status of the minority groups living in France have a direct influence on French hip hop" says even the most basic appraisal in wikipedia on French hip hop. The latter is a part of black culture. The issue of the Maghrebin kids who died in police pursuit is seen as a racial issue. The kids in the Paris banlieue certainly see it that way and this is their response (and has been for the last 4 years). It's not a game of bingo Harri. The whole thing is a fiasco.

I realise that there is a mindset here on ATW that thinks Europe is screwed and somehow apart from the US when it comes to "racial violence" and so somehow it's more ominous... more sinister - I'm sorry Patty I'm not sure I subscribe to that point of view. The LA riots started because of a racial issue. All this youth violence in France exploded for a similar reason. LA had and continues to have gang violence. You get drive by shootings. France has groups of assholes gathering and beating on passers by. Personally I don't think drive by shootings are normal. France is following America and Britain in my view. You know that these kids are all obsessed with (French) rap? The styles may be somewhat different, the root cultural issue may have a different origin but the stupid thuggish outcome in black culture is always absolutely identical.

I cannot stand the man. He hated Liverpool so why bother honouring him with a statue there?

It took me some time to see identity politics for the bollocks that it is but now that I do see it for what it is i realise how badly it permeates social thinking and distorts human relationships to the point of destruction. Great post.

Jesus. Looks like Paris is living through its version of the LA riots.

Tragic.

Well said Pete Moore & Ernest.
