I'm so sorry for this late response, just have been caught up with another project I'm currently working on.
Initially when you just start out, keyword research is very important and needs to be done thoroughly, but I cannot say that i did the research and that's it. SEO keeps changing and new methods come out all the time, so something that you do a year back will in no way work now and be as efficient as it was then. Back to the point, I should say that creating good content and provide value to your readers provides a lot of the traffic. Backlinks are good, but google is very picky these days. They are more interested in content.
You have to provide unique value to your audience in the niche that you are in. Be the authority and with the help of word of mouth, traffic will come by itself with good content.
