And which history would that be? The one where you study and read the documents and culture and events of the past and come to common sense conclusions? Or would that be the progressively rewritten text that demands you think a certain way?

Those would be rhetorical questions.

This is why there is no state recognized religion. That is very important. But at the time of founding, there was enough common ground to establish a basic set of governing principles that helped shape our nation and the laws that govern us. This was not tied to any one religion, but was the common ground between mostly Christian beliefs. Murder was wrong. Stealing was wrong. Marriage between a man and woman was a good thing to be supported.

Not only can any person in this state choose to marry a consenting adult of the opposite sex, those who wish can enter into a civil union with a consenting adult of the same gender with all the privileges and rights equivalent to marriage. A gay person can get married if they wish, to a member of the opposite sex - they are not denied that right. And a non-gay person could enter into a civil union with a member of the same gender. I do not see anything being denied to anybody - except you want to redefine marriage which will deny those who so wish to keep that institution a sacred bond between man and woman.

People have been killed and discriminated against for many reasons. And none of it should be tolerated. But to put the pain and suffering of the gay community on the same level as our black citizens of the past is like comparing a mountain to a mole hill.

Amusing read...

You will have to show me the scriptural references to those interesting claims. If it is some obscure old testament Jewish law, there might be a problem with your argument except for the last one. He would not allow a disabled person to attend a service - and remain disabled. He would heal them.

Anybody who reads the documents surrounding the birth of our country, the songs, the traditions, that can say we were founded on "the ideals of the enlightenment" and denies the strong christian influence inherent in our nation is either delusional, or deliberately trying to rewrite history.

"Then I suggest that you introduce yourself to some more individuals in the gay community and ask them about discrimination, prejudice, and mistreatment. Ask them about the way their rights have been trampled on by society, by employers, and by the government."

How dramatic. I agree there are people out there that stupidly judge others and treat them poorly based on things they dislike. And this is very wrong. But honestly? You are trying to compare this to racism of the past? When a black person could not even use the same bathroom, and a public beating or even killing might go unpunished? Where cross burnings and public ridicule were common?

First of all, who knows a person is gay? Is it as easy to spot as brown skin? I think not. An employer is not even allowed to ask if you are married. And for those whom you need to tell, there are laws in place that do not allow discrimination based on several factors including sexual preference. Our lawyers and courts would be more than happy to make examples out of those who mistreat others. Our black citizens of the past did not have such allies.

No religion has the right to govern the public. But our government was founded on Christian ideals. Do we really want to change the very nature of the building block of our society to appease a special interest group? I would not advise it.

I would agree that abortions and divorce are a sin most of the time, and I would be all for tougher laws against both. But is a spouse is cheated on, even the scriptures excuse divorce. And abortion is more an argument on the sanctity of life, and situations such as endangerment to the mother can be a valid reason.

But nobody is trying to change the definition of "divorce" or "abortion. They still mean what they mean.

"He conceded that his administration's housing plans have not lived up to their promise."

Just scratch out the word "housing".

Sorry, friend, but you have it a little backwards.

I believe there is a much greater need for our government to be affirmed by God and religion than the other way around. Government just needs to stay out of the way of religion.

But social issues affect us all. And for those of us who believe that there are very good reasons why a man and woman should get married and have children, and those children should be raised by both a mother and father, it has become necessary to champion traditional marriage and even discourage divorce when possible.

And God bless you, because it will do you some good.
