Turns out; people with kids generally don't want to pay premium prices for (relatively) small living spaces to share with their children. Folks with kids live in parts of town with nice houses or move to Washington County. What the Pearl has become inhabited with is 20-30 somethings... with dogs. Lots of dogs. So many dogs that the New York Times called the Pearl one of the most dog-friendly urban areas in the country.
While the City budget delayed and delayed the buildout of the Fields, that "barren" 2.2 acres became the only large off-leash space on the West side for dog owners to let their pets run. Other parks are cramped and fenced in. Instead of re-formulating the plan for the Fields, the City has continued to press on, turning yet another Pearl park area into a "playspace" for humans (after the North Park block, Jameson Square, Tanner Springs an numerous smaller green spaces). Now, the most "dog friendly" urban area will have a tiny off-leash area. Want your dog to go for a nice run? Pile into the car for a trip to Laurlhurst, Thousand Acres or the PIR dog park.
The City utterly ignored requests from Pearl dog owners to expand the dog area. Off-leash hours for the large lawn are "being considered." The Fields is destined, like Jameson Square, to become an urban destination suburbanite breeders bus their kids into for a day downtown. The needs of the residents here who pay for these fiascos, be dammed.
