Exactly. If kids have indifferent, overburdened or overly permissive parents, then they are unlikely to mature into productive citizens.

The problem isn't the schools. Put blacks and whites alongside each other (same schools, same teachers) and blacks tend to lag. On a related note, blacks have a higher rate of out of wedlock childbirth, a lower rate of marriage, a higher rate of divorce, a higher rate of incarceration and a higher rate of abortion than the average. Until the black community becomes more committed to the family in general and the child in particular, we will continue to suffer.

It makes no sense to blame teachers for not raising our kids right or judges for being too hard on our kids, we need only look in the mirror to see who the culprit is.

I'm not saying vouchers couldn't benefit schoolkids, but anyone who is telling themselves that the black community's problems are due to schools and not the choices too many of us are making is fooling themselves.

I support the policy of executing terrorists via drone under Obama the same as I supported the program under Bush.

If one is drawing up a list of terrorists in dangerous places (such as Iraq, Afghanistan and Pakistan) whose death by drone is authorized, and one of said terrorists happens to hold American citizenship, that shouldn't keep him off the list.

Alive is always optimal (just so we can get info about their networks and fellow travellers from them, not because the lives of people sworn to kill us are sacrosanct) but if a drone loaded with a bomb sees a guy and there aren't soldiers in place who could capture the guy, the drone should drop the bomb.

As for Olbermann, does anyone on this site honestly care what he thinks or says?

If the Pulitzer committee hands out prizes for long investigative pieces and the Rupert Murdoch helmed WSJ doesn't do such pieces, then I don't see why anyone would be shocked that the WSJ hasn't won the prize.

*Shrugs* Awards don't pay bills or keep a newspaper from going bust, so I'm sure Mr. Murdoch wouldn't trade his newspaper's growing circulation for a mere prize.

16 years ago @ Big Journalism - AP/Univision: Latinos ... · 0 replies · +1 points

The poll said: "61% of people overall said Latinos faced significant discrimination, compared with 52% who said blacks did and 50% who said women."

Mr Parks said "I’ve never said, nor would I ever say all Latinos are racist, but they are far from exclusive victims as this biased poll implies."

The poll doesn't state that Latin Americans are exclusive victims, it states that they are the most victimized, but it also names blacks and woman as groups who face 'significant discrimination'.

Also, no one who knows Latin America would argue Mr. Park's point that there is quite a bit of racism in the community (I lived in Latin America for years and my wife is latin, but of African descent) but I don't think the Latin American community's discrimantion in any way justifies discrimination against them (though let me add that many Latin Americans and some libs seem to confuse border security with discrimination).

The continued existence of Shrek (and to be fair, the Simpsons) reminds me of the old Simpsons joke that 'it will keep going until the show becomes unprofitable'.

I don't blame companies for squeezing every last dollar out of a franchise, but I bail out on franchises when they stop being entertaining, and Shrek reached that point in the third movie (I was never a huge Shrek fan, but I thought the first and second were reasonably entertaining).

The operative word in your post is 'baby'. I don't care if someone abused the kid before Polanski did. That doesn't make what Polanski did any less horrible.

The title is misleading. Judging by the article, the SEIU didn't set foot in the guy's residence (though they were on his property). I can see how the teen or any reasonable person would be terrified by a mob of angry protestors though.

This is exhibit A for why its wrong to picket someone's house (as opposed to their place of business). If you want to register your displeasure with AIG taking money and spending it on lavish parties and whatnot, that's fine, but why drag his family into it?

People need to go to jail for this.

Sadly, that seems to be the way some people think.

I'm not a Polanski apologist (he's a child rapist and he ought to be in prison if not under one) but the accuser's past claims about a consensual relationship and the timing of said relationship seem to contradict her recent claims. *Shrugs* Even if this particular accuser is lying, that doesn't change what Polanski did to the 13 year old girl.
