Mixing genders in the classroom forces boys and girls to have to deal with each other. From what I've seen with my kids' teachers, the teachers have been focused on nothing but the test for a month prior to testing, and then once the WASL/MSP/HSPE/EOC (or whatever we're calling it today) is over, the education stops for the year. This has been nothing but a disservice to the students and it teaches them that learning something is only important if it helps you pass a test, and that a good, solid educational background is less important than that one test score.
