Big Hollywood : Daily Call Sheet: 'RoboCop,' 'Starship Troopers' Remakes, Kevin Smith's Meltdown and Oscar's Salvati

If I ever meet Paul Verhoven, he gets a full set of lumps. Perhaps, just perhaps, the writers might want to consider reading the damn book before they remake "Doogie Hauser, Space Nazi." (Hint, guys: Juan Rico is a Filippino, not an Aryan superman.)

Big Government : Liberals and Unions in Ohio Now Making Up Their Own John Kasich Quotes

Plunderbund? Really? "Union of Plunder?" At least they've got truth in nomenclature. I wonder if they are about to close on that special deal from Misses Edris Umbupoba, wife of former Minister of the Interriers of Nigeria, who has a wonderful way to keep $30 million (THIRTY MILLION USD) from falling into the hands of the corrupt government if they will just send her their bank routing information....

Big Government : Radical Environmentalists Blocking Shovel Ready Projects?

Quick clarification: In the first sentence of the fourth paragraph, you note that the project would pump 150,000 barrels a day, but later in the paragraph you have a hyperlinked statement saying it will pump a million barrels per day. Which is it? I'm not disputing your figures, but they need to be consistent, don't they?

And so we honored his passing. Even if we had never met him in life, we wept the tears as if we were laying our own blood and our own bone to rest. We stood in solemn review as he passed by. We felt the grief in a young life ended, but that grief was tempered with the fierce pride in a young life not wasted. To those who think America has lost its way, you should have been there; you would have seen the soul of a people reaching out to hold those who grieve. To those who think America has lost its heart, you should have been there; you would have seen the beating heart of the nation pulsing deep and true.

It was hot Sunday. It was muggy in the way that only the American Southeast can produce. The service itself ran long at the funeral home. These people who lined the streets and the highway stood in that heat for a couple of hours, all for the brief moment in which they could pay their respect to the family as the funeral procession passed by. And there were thousands of them. Williamsburg is a town of perhaps 1,500 people. Jellico is about the same size. Yet there were literally thousands of people turned out to honor this young man. And they were sincere. David K. Cooper was not a Medal of Honor winner, nor a distinguished general with decades in uniform, nor a veteran who had returned to his home town and spent years in public service. He wasn’t a celebrity. He was just one of us. Just. One. Of. Us.

Here's a taste of my story: Sergeant David K. Cooper was mortally wounded by small arms fire while on dismounted patrol in Qadasiyah, Iraq. He died of these wounds in Baghdad on 27 August, 2008. On Sunday, 7 September, Sergeant Cooper was laid to rest in Jellico, Tennessee, following funeral services in nearby Williamsburg, Kentucky. The Patriot Guard attended the services and provided escort from the funeral home to the cemetery at the family’s request.

Big Hollywood : PC-Fascism: Entertainment Media Okay with 'Censoring' 9/11 Composer

I just sent the following e-mail to Nonesuch: Good Afternoon. I am interested in buying a copy of Steve Reich’s newest album, “WTC 9/11,” but only if I can get a copy with the originally intended cover art. I think the actual depiction of the WTC on 9/11 beats the fool out of an amorphous cloud bank. I am utterly astounded by the folks who objected to the original cover, and disappointed that Nonesuch would bow to their demands for self-censorship. How may I get an original, so I may honor the artist’s original inspiration? Thanks,

Serious question: Does a "payroll tax cut" mean that the tax withheld from my paycheck will decrease, but I still owe the taxes at the end of the year, or does it mean that it an actual tax cut, that I will be sending a lower percentage of my pay to D.C.?

Big Hollywood : HomeVideodrome: 'Conan,' 'Better Off Dead,' Soul Surfer'...

This is going to sound weird, but I think Conan was a great movie that sucked bilgewater. As an adventure? Great. As a sword-swinging free-for-all? No problem. As Conan? No freaking way. The writiers just did not "get" the nature of the barbarian Robert E. Howard created. In the movie, Conan is released from slavery by his owner and has a hard time realizing he was free. In the book, Conan was stunned, captured, chained...but was never a slave. In chains, he was still a free man. He crushed his captor's skull with a four-foot length of broken whirling chain in the middle of a blizzard to escape captivity. He didn't rob a tomb to get his sword--he fought the animated skeleton of the warrior king to take it. And that beautiful scene about "what is best in life"? Not Howard. That little incident is attributed to the adolesence one Genghis Khan. It was a good movie, a fun movie...but it wasn't Conan.

Big Government : Alabama Still Collecting Tax for Confederate Vets

"But wait a minute," some might say, "they fought for the Confederacy! They shouldn't be memorialized!" So, are they proposing that the state abrogate an obligation on the basis of "I don't like them"? If so, I suppose we need to go bulldoze up the National Cemetery at Little Bighorn because some Native Americans dislike the memory of Custer, and get to work at Arlington disintering all the vets of the Spanish-American War (La Raza may be upset), any Soldier, Sailor or Marine who ever set foot in the Philppines (can't let the Huks be unhappy), all Vietnam veterans (or else the hippies might be sad), or for that matter, any serviceman buried there after 1950.

I am from Alabama, and I am a landowner in Alabama. I pay this tax as part of my property taxes. I don't have a problem with it. The facilities at Marbury are very nice, and I think it is important to maintain this memorial to the common man. Confederate regiments were raised by individual states, not by the national government. The state of Alabama took on the obligation of pensions and etc. for the Alabama veterans, which included interment in a state-run cemetery for those veterans who were not laid to rest in their home town. To me, the state retains the obligation, just as the federal government is responsible for the upkeep of Arlington and other national cemeteries.
