Ah, the 1980's. Remember all those "I Heart my (fill in the blank)" Bumper Stickers?

I remember National Lampoon had an advertisement in its Classified section that offered various sized square stickers with nothing but a picture of a SCREW on them.

Consider how long a victim would take to notice the fact that someone had compromised their bumper sticker with one of these little gems, effectively perverting their message:

"I SCREW my Grandkids... I SCREW my Dog... etc, etc..

I will answer my own question, after a bit of investigation. An attorneys site (natch) says:

"Damages under DOHSA are determined based upon the actual or projected value of the financial benefit that would have been received from the decedent. Under this theory, dependent children can recover for the value of the care and guidance they would have received from the decedent parent. A spouse can recover for the actual value of the financial contribution the decedent would have made to the family had he lived, less any amount determined to have provided for the care and maintenance of the decedent personally. Therefore, the recovery can be reduced by the amount of resources deemed to provide for the consumption and needs of the decedent had he lived.

A simplified method of determining the needs or consumption of the decedent is to take equally apportion the family income to each member and deduct that equal portion from the projected income to account for the decedent’s anticipated expenditure.

The DOHSA does not provide for a loss of consortium or loss of society claim, however, the spouse can recover for the monetary value of the household services the decedent would have provided. This portion of recovery is based on the number of hours the beneficiaries would have expected to receive in services from the decedent and calculated based upon an hourly rate for those services projected out for the decedent’s life expectancy."

How is this unfair? These guys that were killed are in their early 20's, at least the ones whose spouses are complaining about the "limit".

So, what IS the limit? Was it mentioned in the story?

"State law in Texas is that if your property causes the damage you are liable."

EXCEPT if you are traveling on rural Farm-to-Market (FM) roads, such as the one I live by, where you as the driver are expected to be on the lookout for livestock, dogs, etc.

Not sure if this was a suburban neighborhood or a rural area in Canada, but if I hit and killed someones family pet with my vehicle, I would fix the damage myself.

How much can a bumper cost, after paying a deductible, anyway?

They won't release the name of the paper because that would allow folks to access known classified information. It is all about damage control; Neither Confirm nor Deny any specific info is classified.

I agree with Walter, why is Treason not on the table? Leaking classified information in time of War? If found guilty (and these days THAT is sadly improbable), this Drake person should be facing a firing squad. Televised.

The "Growing Dance" and chant? Geesh.

Is this what makes the White House garden create produce well ahead of known growing times, like last year?

Making a profit is anathema to these people. Most of them have lived their entire lives feeding from the public trough or Daddys Money.

Never, ever rent or lease to a Progressive. You WILL lose money on the deal.....

There is nothing "magic" about using only cash any more than there is magic associated with card use (debit or credit).

Following a job layoff and personal bankruptcy, we currently enjoy having only cash and checks to make our purchases.

Fewer things infuriate me more than seeing the silly ads on TV where the credit card folks just whiz right through checkouts while the bumbling cash users are holding everyone else up. 99% of the time this situation is completely reversed, with a bunch of folks that have their cash ready in their hand to check out but everyone is waiting on the credit or debit card to process. Then that one fails and they want to try "another" one?!?!?

Not to mention those who don't even know what product (credit or debit) they have and how to use it....
