Here we go again. Fan/expert sitting at home in front of the laptop is suddenly a recruiting expert and knows more than our coaching staff.

People put waaaay too much stock into recruiting rankings and who else offers a kid. Have some faith that our coaches actually know what they're doing (top 3 finishes in the conference the past three years).

It has been shown that recruiting rankings don't necessarily correlate with wins. The "experts" are often wrong about how good a player is/will be.

Holiday Bowl big shooters are trying to tell us bringing a former Chargers head coach, who was fired, back to SD with his mediocre football team is a selling point? I'm not buying it. I'm 100% Beaver fan to the core, but I just don't buy that line. I fear that when it comes pick 'em time the Holiday (and Sun) are going to look at how many TVs are in a school's market and that will trump all. Despite recent success, OSU still isn't a "national draw" for TV sets.

Thanks to Larry "Pick 'em" Scott, finishing 2nd or 3rd doesn't mean you're going to get the 2nd or 3rd place bowl game. The 2nd place bowl (Alamo) has the second pick, so they can take any bowl-eligible team, regardless of record or head-to-head.

I'd say, when in doubt, err on the side of showing respect. Yes, women should remove hats, as well.

While we're on the subject, why do we play the anthem before sporting events? It seems rather arbitrary. Why not before movies? Before plays? Before a 5k?

And why God Bless America at the 7th inning stretch? It just adds to an already-too-long baseball game.

Verle Sorgen is probably saying "Oregon State got what they deserved." as he chuckles demonically.

Not sure who claimed Jim Fogltance is a former player. Kerry's article says "Not so much, though, when the replay official is a Tucson citizen, an Arizona grad and, according to one source, a donor to the school’s athletic department."

Nevertheless, wouldn't it be wise of the Pac 10 to remove any scent of controversy by assigning him to games other than Arizona's? Seems like common sense to me.

Oh, and he blatantly missed the review of the AZ receiver's catch at the 1, calling it a TD. It was on Beavers All Access last night and I watched it frame-by-frame and he's lying flat on the ground with the ball around the 1, not to mention the knee being down even earlier. Not sure what he saw to confirm it as a TD.

Herbstreit did do the USC-Ohio State game last year. Commentator's aren't allowed to make a pick for the game they're covering. There's no provision against alums calling their school's games.

Dan Fouts, when he worked for ABC, called several Oregon games, also.

The question is, which team will Bellotti belittle - OSU or BSU? (I'm kidding).

Just curious - why is it we can get an SEC team to fly all the way out here for a baseball road series in front of 1500-2000 fans (which can't be much $ in their pocket), but can't get a football team to come play 1 game in front of 46,000? Sure, the football team has a lot more personnel and gear, but it's only 1 night in a hotel compared to 3-4 nights for a baseball team.

That $1.475 million is if we only get 1 team in. If we get 2 teams into BCS games it's $1.85 million each (assuming this season's payout) among the 12 teams.

So to get a shot at an extra $80k every 2-3 years, we give up playing each of the other 9 teams, we probably pick up another IAA game? No thanks. I suppose there would be some share of the TV deal for the "championship" game, but it's still unappealing.

I've only heard "silly season" referring to the off season in golf when they play (or used to play) The Skins Game, The GrandSlam, 3-Tour Challenge, etc. Isn't the entire season of NASCAR silly? It isn't even a sport.

It's a lot like the knee-jerk airport security changes that occur AFTER an incident. 1) it's closing the barn door after the horses are out and 2) does little to address the REAL problem. These are just there to give the appearance of security/safety.

It's not holding a cell phone to your ear that's the distraction (although it is part of the problem). It's that your attention isn't on the task of driving. It's on your conversation, concentrating on what the other person is saying, rather than watching traffic, anticipating other drivers' moves, etc. Being hands-free won't change that. We'll just be distracted with two hands on the wheel, rather than one.

Oh well. We'll go on passing feel-good laws that do little about the real issue.

"black long-sleeved T-shirt with the Duck wings on it"?! Black is an OSU color, so it's flattering how Oregon has borrowed it. And those "duck" wings look more like fairy wings to most people.

Can't wait to see what costumes they wear next year. Maybe they'll introduce some purple or crimson.
