It's easy to get more fans and it has nothing to do with sounding "fresh". The more generic you sound, the wider your appeal will be, because everyone will find something that vaguely sounds "good" to their ears. That's why these genre mishmash amalgams/abominations are getting so much widespread success vs. bands that have their own personal identity without relying on cliches and familiar, tired structures and riff types to hook listeners who maybe haven't listened to quite as many extreme bands.
I disagree completely with the review, unfortunately. I thought the film was a heavy-handed semi-autobiographical stack of shit about the director's own pathetic life (the portrayal of Ryan Reynolds' character was laughable), dripping with Mormonism and really just a sap-fest for indie kids who thought Juno and Nick And Norah were both great films. Fuck this movie, wholeheartedly. I brought my ex-girlfriend to this movie for our first date and we both left the theater feeling violated and taken advantage of for having paid money to see this garbage. Movie would have been so much better if the kid had been hauled off to fucking jail out of the car wreckage like what would have happened in real life, which the movie PRETENDED to portray. By far the worst coming of age film I've ever seen. People should rent Welcome To The Dollhouse instead and see this done right.
