This explains why I always referred to that Beatles song as Asian Submarine. :-)

I wrote about it earlier this morning! It's the ninth or tenth reply to the original article. Here's what I wrote:

-Executive Decision: at the time this film came out (1996), the idea of Islamic terrorists hijacking a 747 might've seemed crazy but watching this post-9/11, the film now has a disturbing relevance... it's a great B-movie, masterfully constructed (with the exception of some shoddy miniature work at the end) with a likable cast (headed by Kurt Russell), a Jerry Goldsmith score at his militaristic best, bad guys who are actually bad, and it doesn't have that third act "The CIA was behind it the whole time!" revelation that other movies have... I can watch this movie anytime, day or night...

One of the smartest lines of dialogue for me is, "We better get out of here before one of those creatures kills Guy!" It works on a couple different levels. :-)

I just watched it on Blu-Ray so it's still fresh.

This is going back a ways... 1996 to be exact....

A friend of mine had a bar mitzvah and during the reception, you have friends and family come up to light a candle... each person can choose a song to play while they do this and my friend had his two brothers come up to light a candle with the Three Amigos theme playing! They even paused while the song went on "AAAAAAAAmigos!" and everyone thought it was great (except for some of the other young folks there who thought they were too cool for school).

I'm a fan! (I love Joe Mantegna's cameo as Mr. Flugelman - "I want these schmucks off of my lot!"). Apparently, Sam Kinison had a cameo as a Mexican bandit but the scene was cut.

Yeah, I've read about all that re: the "stew" (good choice of words!) that wrote Superman... check out this site for more: http://supermancinema.co.uk/

... as for Golden Gun, I should try it again... I have all the Bond "Ultimate Edition" boxsets (three were gifts from when I worked at MGM as a temp in their records/archives department) and I've read great things about the Blu-Ray releases but I think I'll wait until ALL the Bond films are out... sadly, considering MGM's current state of affairs, it might be a while...

Good call on Munich. Crystal Skull... I have a friend who hates it and even though there's much to like, I think my initial reaction was, "Close, but no cigar." But Cate Blanchett makes one hot Commie! :-)

Every time I catch Superman Returns on TV, it interests me less and less, though I'd be interested in seeing an extended cut if Singer ever puts one together. And unlike many people here, I thought Brandon Routh did a fine job with the role.

I think it was actually People Against Goodness and Normalcy. :-)

The funny thing with Tom Mankiewicz is he wrote one of the greatest superhero films of all time (Superman) and he wrote Live and Let Die (which was a lot of fun) but he also wrote The Man with the Golden Gun (which is one of my least favorite Bond films, period).

Thanks, Jed! And yeah, no one does Webb like Aykroyd.

Nice to see I'm not the only one who enjoys Loaded Weapon (William Shatner as General Mortars!) and Snake Eyes (Nic Cage cranked up to 11)!

Since most would argue I never had any "cool credentials" to begin with, here we go:

-Congo: yes, with Amy the Talking Gorilla... I love this movie, from Ernie Hudson's "Great White Hunter" (who happens to be black) to Tim Curry's ridiculous Romanian accent to Joe Don Baker's scenery chewing to that stupid Lebo M theme song to lines of dialogue like, "I'm not a pound of sugar, I'm a primatologist!"... I love it and I wouldn't give it up for anything...

-late Woody Allen: I would put Deconstructing Harry and Everyone Says I Love You up against Annie Hall any day of the week... the only late Allen movie I absolutely loathed with every fiber of my being was Whatever Works, one of the most disgusting, dark, cynical movies I've ever seen (which is ironic since I love Deconstructing Harry which is also dark and cynical)

-some (but not all) of the Police Academy sequels: I recently watched some of these and they all have their moments, except for the seventh film "Mission to Moscow" which was direct-to-video here in the US (the DVD is a glorified coaster)... I particularly like 6 "City Under Siege" with Kenneth Mars as a corrupt mayor who can never remember the right thing to say: "Bring them to... oh, the court thing... justice! Bring them to justice!"

-Weekend at Bernie's 1 and 2: yes, I enjoy both of them... someone on the IMDB wrote a whole thesis about the first film and how it's symbolic of man's blindness to the people around him or some crap like that... and I love that weird voodoo stuff in the second film...

-Dragnet with Dan Aykroyd and Tom Hanks... Pagans!!! This film is the very definition of guilty pleasure and is one of those movies (like the ones above) that I can watch anytime it's on TV... I love Dan Aykroyd's staccato line delivery, Ira Newborn's pompous score, and Christopher Plummer as the villain...

If you like "Rififi," you'll probably like the parody/satire "Big Deal on Madonna Street."
