Ran into this article, http://www.weeklystandard.com/blogs/not-all-emplo... and you have a point that the weekly figures shouldn't be taken too seriously, as the article supports.

I do feel the official figures, though, are not accurate since they rely on the U3 figures. My own opinion is the U5 and U6 figures are closer to the truth and even Gallup.com provides a better look at the overall unemployment picture.

I also think that the numbers can be manipulated by people. Mark Twain may have been correct when he said, "There are lies, damned lies and statistics."

I think it is a dance with the numbers by someone at BLS.

That is why, I guess, we have to live our lives as a light. Paul presented his case to Agrippa in Acts. And as Agrippa is recorded in Acts 26:28, "Then Agrippa said unto Paul, Almost thou persuadest me to be a Christian." But, Paul was not able to convince him. Even though, Paul was a witness and apostle.

Hope you had a successful fishing expedition and are enjoying your trip.

I think it is a mix. Some parts of the economy are edging slightly up, but many sectors are still down. Services industries are up, but manufacturing is still anemic. Personal saving rates are down while credit spending on credit cards is up, not a good sign. The unemployment rate seems artificially improving by people who are dropping off the rolls which then reduces the number of weeks for unemployment benefits and further reduces the unemployment numbers for the official count.

All the while, places like Portland increase service rates like garbage while reducing the garbage collection periods.

HP announces 27,000 layoffs.

Political pandering for votes is in full swing and politicians are promising just about everything to everybody.

So, in my view, the economy is still in turmoil and will remain so for the foreseeable future.

But, that follows 40 plus weeks of unemployment adjustments. Last weeks figures were adjusted down up 2,000. Now, this weeks are down by 2,000. The previous weeks was adjusted up by 3 or 4 thousand, then the last weeks were adjusted down by 3 or 4 thousand. Someone seems to be playing fast and loose with numbers at BLS or didn't do well with adding and subtracting. I say this because the total unemployed seems to be bouncing along at a pretty steady 14 million.

Now, there are millions of new graduates (high school and college) that will be entering the job markets. They are not counted in the official figures.
