The part that confuses me and makes me think the critics are lying to themselves about the 15 pt value of color is: What if the wine tastes and smells like the best wine they have ever had, but the color is off? Do they dock it to a 95? How about the opposite way, where a wine tastes quite mediocre, but gets up to an 89 because of color? Yet other wines of similar taste are scored 82?

I do think at that point it would be confirmation bias, in that if the wine tastes like a 100 pt wine, then the color all of a sudden is beautiful.

It doesn't make much sense to have color account for so much.

It just occurred to me that the most I have actually personally spent on a single bottle of wine is $39.99, and that was for a 2009 Taille Pieds 1er Cru that I haven't even drank yet. To be honest, based on my income level currently and how I read and see about blind taste tests where a $25 bottle of Bordeaux gets ranked up there with the 1st Growths, I get antsy spending more than $40 on a single bottle when in the back of my mind I could buy 2-3 kickass bottles of some unheard of Haut-Medoc Chateau or Beaujolais or Bourgogne Passetoutgrain (or one of each) with that same amount, and probably enjoy them just as much.

At a Distributor expo I did try Hundred Acre Ark Vineyard 2007 (an overinflated 100 pts from Parker), and while I thought it was very good, I would never ever, ever, ever pay $240+ a bottle for it.

I love this post. Wine enjoyment vs. Price is such an interesting topic to me.

I would also add that the Loire Valley produces some fantastic Rose, specifically the region of Cheverny. Similar to the Rhone and Provence in acidity and backbone, but a slightly different fruit component and minerality, which is fun to experience.

That being said, the best Rose I have ever had was Kracher Illmitz Rose made from the Zweigelt grape from Burgenland, Austria. Unbelievable, especially for the price (if you can find it). Anybody living in Savannah, GA go to www.lechai.com to pick some up. Amazing juice, and to add to the point of this post, I had it on my honeymoon on Tybee Island.

Indeed, it would. I guess I would say that people wouldn't be writing books called "The Emperor of Wine" and making movies like Mondovino if the press had such a small influence. Most people in wine retail (shops or restaurants) don't get to taste thousands of wines and make their own calls as to how good wines are, so they go elsewhere to get the information they need to be able to sell and one of those sources is the press/blogs.

Well, as someone who got into wine because I got hired at a restaurant that requires an extensive knowledge of a very diverse and esoteric wine list, I can say that while I get a lot of my information from reps, our wine obsessed chef (he holds 30 minute pre-shifts every day to discuss wine as a collective staff), and fellow co-workers, I also get much of my information from reading blogs and publications. Also, the reps who talk to us about wine use positive reviews extensively from the press to discuss their wines.

To re-focus my point, while restaurant and retail staff influence what customers buy, how much of a trickle down effect is there of retail and restaurant staff being influenced by the press? I can't tell you the countless times I have wandered into a wine store and when I ask for a recommendation the salesman says "This wine scored a 92 in the Wine Advocate," or something along those lines. So, while the buying public is a couple of steps removed from the press and critics, the people selling them the wine usually are not.

Does that make sense? Perhaps I shouldn't be drinking wine while typing this out.

Colts suck. They won't make it out of the Wild Card round next year.

Imagine in 2 years going from the 13-3 Titans to the 4-12 Redskins to the even worse Rams.
