Part 1: In the article, “Data – Collecting, Reporting, and Using it!,” Andrew Wolk wrote that data may be the most critical issue for the soon-to-be-established White House Office of Social Innovation to prioritize. “If we are going to strive to advance a social innovation agenda,” he wrote, “we need to get a better handle on data − how we collect it, how we report it, and how we use it.” True enough. But given the vast amount of data available for capture, and our ever growing computer-based ability to crunch and manipulate it, we need to be smart about what data we focus upon if we are to wind up with something useful -information leading to knowledge and understanding—rather than just volumes of numbers and charts that serve no useful purpose. The question is not “what data can we obtain?,” but “what data do we need?”
