And thank you for YOUR service. As I said above I spent decades working for the Dept of Army. And EVERY military person has added to the greatest Army in the World, even in peacetime. I see greatness in them all. Especially the ones that actually appreciate the opportunities that the training gives them in the real world. I was drafted before I finished my degree. But I managed to get into a career that furthered my degree. And as a Civil Servant, I was encourage to take it up a notch, and I am very glad I was pushed.
It wasn't easy, but I still believe THAT is what set me up for a decent life, and education.

I was born in the Appalachians. Poor dirt farmers. I mangaged a two year scholarship and finagled it to a 6 year Industrial Engineering degree and a couple of years of another major I capitalized on 20 years later in software development.. I worked two jobs doing so. My parents had NOTHING! Got DRAFTED in 1970. Two tours in Vietnam. On March 29th 1972, got horribly wounded during the Easter offensive. And have suffered with them for 48 years. Wasn't supposed to have walked again, but spent 9 months in Japan in PAINFUL physical therapy. I have a Bronze Star for bravery and my pain, and Purple Heart with cluster. And three letters from two Presidents awarding them to me. What have you got? Don't bother, I already know. Spent the next 34 years working in Weapon System development for the Army. Invested my money wisely, sacrificed the "good" life then, to have a good life now. If my daughters had not gotten Scholarships, they would have had to follow in MY footsteps. It would not have killed them to do so. Wife of 22 years died of cancer before WE could enjoy our time together. I had a software developing company the last 5 years before I retired at 51. Busted my anus to be able to retire before I was too tired and sick like my father was. He retired and died the same year.
And the main thing is I NEVER took advantage of another human. Just took advantage of what few opportunities offered me. And it's been MY life experience that MOST get just as many, but they let them slide by. I don't.

My next door neighbor just turned 79. He lived in Chi Town back in the 60's. He said the SAME THING as you just did! He mentions all the time that he even had to bribe the Sanitation workers to pick up his trash, and pay the city for the privilege!
