Let's quit the name-calling. Can we all agree on the need for the United States to convene its own objective, transparent Climate Truth Commission? It defies common sense that we outsource our climate science to the UN then allow it to serve as both judge (IPCC) and advocate (Kyoto Protocol, Copenhagen).

Global warming is here. That much is evident. But here's the key question.

Does CO2 'drive' global warming or does CO2 merely 'contribute' to global warming?

If 'drives' is correct, America and the rest of the world must quickly restructure our energy infrastructure to reduce CO2 emissions. But if CO2 merely 'contributes' to global warming, we need to rethink our response to global warming/climate change. If Mother Nature actually drives climate, then we should not move precipitously to burden our economy with carbon taxes and alternative-energy subsidies. I, for one, do not want to pay a dollar or two more per gallon or see the blight of wind mills because of faulty science.

Sadly, the United States has out-sourced our scientific opinion on global warming to the United Nations. ...an organization more concerned about political influence and funding than conducting good science.

It's crystal clear. The United States needs our own objective, transparent climate commission to think-through global warming. We need the advice of a 'Climate Truth Commission' before we burden our economy with expensive energy. Both sides of the man-made global warming issue should welcome such an approach. ...since each is so darn sure of its facts.

All is not lost. Daily I read editorials, comments and letters-to-the-editor from all over the nation. Support for cap and trade is evaporating. Whereas two weeks ago it was maybe 2-to-1 against cap and trade, opinion now seems to be 6-to-1 against. The Senate will be wise to heed the overwhelming lack of public support and stop this disastrous legislation from passing into law.

If instead of cap and trade the United States had a national mandate to replace coal generation plants with natural gas and nuclear energy, plus if we replaced our commuter cars with battery-powered electric cars, we would drastically reduce our dependence on foreign oil and reduce CO2 emissions faster and beyond the proposed cap and trade targets.

I'm a Democrat who thinks the House overplayed its hand when it passed cap and trade. In 2010 many of those representatives who voted for it will lose their jobs. I read editorials, comments and letters-to-the-editor from all over the country. Anti- sentiment outnumbers pro- sentiment by at least 3 to 1. The Senate will be wise to heed this overwhelming lack of public support.

Cap and trade strikes me as crazy. Effectively, we Americans will be adding an additional tax to our energy bills. Why are we about to do this? Because the United Nations shouts 'climate crisis'. The problem with the scenario is that the United Nations is a political organization riddled with power grabbing and backroom deals. Why the heck are we relying on them for scientific judgment? Why aren't we listening to an American climate commission? Why? We don't have one, that's why. As I said, it's crazy.

The underlying premise of cap and trade--that CO2 drives global warming--is based on United Nations' climate reports that are tainted by politics and agenda. Plus, there's been a lot of new climate discoveries since Kyoto that are omitted from the reports. Frankly, the reports don't pass the smell test -- see www.energyplanusa.com . America needs our own objective scientific assessment of global warming. I am a Democrat who for the past 20 years believed global warming was caused by CO2. I've had my doubts but now after reading the UN reports I realize that the fix was in all along. The UN reports add up to politics not science. We need our own objective climate commission to think through global warming and determine whether it's driven by CO2.
