MetsBlog.com : Note: Gooden Confused, Fans Annoyed

I was not at all worked up by the lack of in my face Mets stuff around Citi Field, I know why I'm there I don't need a history lesson to remind me, but I do understand how that sort of thing is important to others and I don't begrudge them their complaints about a lack of it. But the idea that they feel the need to remove Doc's signature as if it were common graffiti is very upsetting to me. I was very happy how we had recently been able to "reacquire him" from the Yankees, and now this. Ugh!

MetsBlog.com : Pepsi Refresh Pre-Game: Mets vs Brewers - Game Three

I even tried to dive into it further, I checked day/night splits. Church is virtually identical, and Sheff is slightly better at night. There is something else going on. My only guess is there is an assumption that Murphy and Church, being younger, can "get it going" more quickly, and that Sheffield needs more PT for that purpose. That or Manuel just doesn't like Church?

You are correct, 3-3 with a double and an RBI, and a walk as well. Small sample, but still.

MetsBlog.com : News: Tatis to Start at 2B Today

You may be on to something, but wasn't it Jerry Manuel who "dissed" Church at the onset of spring training when at that time he anointed Murphy the everyday LF and said that Tatis would be taking time away from Church? Now it seems that Sheffield will be taking that time away. I'm not convinced that it's coming from above. Jerry seems to feel Church needs a lit match held under him, and he continues to hold it there.

Given Castro's history of breaking down when he's most needed, giving him a rest makes sense, and Jerry has been saying for about a week that Tatis was going to get a game at 2B this weekend, so that makes sense, but sitting Church for Sheffield is a bit of a head scratcher, especially against a righty.

I just read that O'Day was placed on waivers to make room for Nelson Figueroa. I imagine that the Angels will re-claim him, considering their overall pitching situation. I like Nelson in the long man/spot starter role, and I'm glad that they didn't send Parnell down just because he happens to have options. I think this was the right move.

That's fair. Personally I'm happy the way he is, sometimes we forget he's 26 years old, but if I were going to "change" him I'd take the guy Keith Hernandez suggested the other day that he could be: a fewer home run hitting, .340 batting, more RBI even than now guy, if he went to RF more often.

True enough, but it's hard to be too upset with the guy when I look at the back of his baseball card. I'm glad he's on my team. .300 hitting 100 run scoring 30 home run hitting 100 run driving in 20 stolen base gold glove winning 3rd basemen do not exactly grow on trees, especially in this organization.

I don't have time to do a deep thorough investigation right now, but I just googled the phrase "team infield defense" and the first link was to a Hardball Times article from 2007 about 2006 team infield defense, and according to the data there the Mets infield in 2006 was the 7th best overall, 5th best on just the left side, 5th best on just the right side, in Major League Baseball. The only difference between that IF and our current one is Luis Castillo instead of Jose Valentin.

I think it's completely reasonable to miss The Fonz, Ordonez and Ventura, and don't forget to include Olerud who by playing 1st made them all better. But realize that in the entire history of baseball that was one of the best fielding infields ever. You want to see some truly uninspiring infield play? Watch a Marlins game.
