There are some striking parallels between the two- like the pawnbroker characters, and the wealthy old men who seek immortality, vampirism. The strain series is also a bit lovecraftian in some ways. The group of ancients vs Sardu and his growing plague reminds me of the elder things vs the shoggoths. Im sure theres plenty more examples if you look into it. I never got the impression that Aronofsky's films were "preach" or anything like that. He isn't telling anybody directly what to think about any of his storys. Mostly he just chronicles a characters decline, leaving the viewer to interpret it as they will. It may be an effect after you view one of his films that you think to yourself, people should never be like that character- but that isn't preaching, its effective storytelling.
