david-- we actually added exactly that in 2.5.1, you should see a progress bar when your database updates. for many users it will happen to fast to even notice, but for large databases it will help.

Ok, grfgguvf's problem was resolved this weekend. It was a bug on the IntenseDebate side.

I can verify grfgguvf's observation and I'm trying to dope out this problem.
