Hi Sonia, Thank you for this, and I love that you included your narration. I find it so interesting that of all the beautiful things in her apartment, you picked these two figurines. Somehow these quirkier, personal objects (like the coasters I have) seem to connect us to the person more intimately.

Spark | CBC Radio : Full Interview: Jay Frank on the future of hit songs

Hi Lee, thanks for sharing your insights. I wonder what you make of Jay's argument that if labels make more money, they'll take a chance on artier or more experimental acts. I wonder when the last time was that we had a really surprising breakout band/artist?

Hey Orian, yes, we need to get back on the 'Nora's Computer Club' train. As for podcasts, I know not everyone is keen on using Apple's iTunes, but subscribing through iTunes is an easy way to get your podcasts delivered automatically.

Thanks for the kind words. I find Twitter particularly helpful in this regard. I like the 'lightness' of the medium, the fact that reciprocity isn't required, and the focus on information exchange. It seems to facilitate a level of collegiality.

One of the things I really liked about the conversation was the observation about the impact of specific design decisions. As you say, even something like threaded comments can increase the feeling of deeper communication.

Hey Drew, thanks for the kind words. I really value the community aspect of Spark. We're looking for ways to expand what we do as a platform for connecting the community (for instance, with the Spark Exchange initiative: http://spark.stackexchange.com/)

Thanks for the feedback, Russell. Personally, I love the fact that we can make the longer form interviews available. The one challenge, though, is that when the ratio of raw to edited gets too great, it can be difficult to edit and keep the conversation coherent. I'm hoping to get back to something we did a little more consistently earlier in the show's life, which was to pick a specific, tight focus for the beginning of the interview, which would then go 'on air' and then broaden the conversation out for the Web. That seemed to work both in terms of giving the Web/podcast audience a fuller experience, and also not ending up with a split or unclear focus on the radio.

Hi Eric, Thanks for the thoughtful comment. Well, I hope we're not turning into Moral Panic Weekly, (funny!) though I admit, we did make two back-to-back episodes with some similar tones. I guess I'd like the show to walk a line: not dipping into moral panic/technological determinism, but at the same time, recognizing that technology is culture and has cultural consequences. To your point, no, books didn't turn out to be harbingers of doom, but we're certainly way different people, with a way different society, than if we were still an oral culture. I don't think it's too much of a stretch to think that the Internet may have as many cultural consequences as the culture of the book did. But yes, point taken. We'll try to avoid MPW!

Hi Kyle, Thanks! It's sort of a bailiwick of mine. I actually interviewed Andrew Feenberg on a different topic several years ago, for a documentary that I made for IDEAS. I should look into an opportunity to have him on the show. Thanks for the suggestion!

Hi Jen, Sorry you found it distracting. As the interviewer, I had to smile at the "subtle power struggle" idea. Not at all! I have always pronounced it dat' uh, and I think it would be odd to change the way I pronounce words to match the person I am talking to. For the record, dat' uh isn't a mispronunciation. As with many words, there is more than one accepted pronunciation. See below: http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/data

Well, I think, in general, we'd like to keep it to technical questions, which can include the etiquette and social norms of communications technology, but I'm hesitant to put too many rules around it. I think we need to see how this experiment evolves organically. It's really about what the Spark community decides the purpose of it should be. One thing I would say is that we hope it can be a place where people who are trying to learn more about computers can ask questions in a non-judgmental environment, and have those questions answered by our community members with expertise.
