Big Hollywood : 'J. Edgar' - Film's Most Accurate Portrayal of a Complicated Historical Figure

So let me get this straight. You applaud this as the most accurate depiction of Hoover because it heavily suggests he was homosexual, instead of outright showing him engaging in homosexual activity with other men. This, despite the fact there is zero evidence he was homosexual, the claim he was a cross dresser comes from a convicted perjurer with an ax to grind, and the disclosure by a defecting Soviet that the homosexual rumors were part of a disinformation campaign against Hoover. And then you applaud the casting of an attractive man as Hoover's "lover" rather than how that individual looked in real life, so that audiences will believe Hoover couldn't help being attracted to this man. Do you understand what the word "accurate" actually means?

I agree with Christian's take on that line. You don't find it a little tongue in cheek for HI to blame the President of the United States as he prepares to rob a convenience store?

Big Hollywood : Trailer Talk: Leonardo DiCaprio is 'J. Edgar'

Exactly. And Vasili Mitrokhin, a KGB major who defected to Britain, stated that the rumors of Hoover being homosexual were actually part of the Soviet's disinformation campaign meant to discredit him in the public's eyes. It's really bothersome that it's become accepted as "fact" by a large segment of the population. That Dustin Lance Black wrote the screenplay does not give me hope that this will treat the subject matter correctly.

Big Hollywood : Today's Open Thread: #5 'Lost'

I'm very glad "Lost" is included on your list, John. I'd place it at number one on my own list. I think the entire point of the series was summed up by Mr. Eko before he died, when he said "I did not ask for the life that I was given but it was given none the less, and with it I did my best." All of the characters, like everyone in life, are faced with circumstances in their lives beyond their control, but it is the choices they make in dealing with those circumstances that are important. I was really surprised when we found out that Jacob was not some god-like character, but was actually a somewhat naive guy who had this huge responsibility thrust upon him. He doesn't know all the answers, but must deal with his circumstances the best that he can. Ultimately, the show is framed by Jack's acceptance of his place in life. I loved that the series was filled with such well-drawn characters and examined the themes of "Faith vs. Science", "Sin and Redemption", "Life and Death" and "Free Will vs. Fate". And it did so without ever treating the themes cynically. It's pretty amazing that a show would take such a respectful stance on religion and never once sucker-punch the audience on it.

I love the show also. Since I've been conditioned to expect a sucker punch, I had a little bit of a hard time enjoying that episode until it was over! I'm hoping that with Tim Minear as an executive producer, we won't have to worry too much about sucker punches. He's apparently a center-right guy and even a reader of the Corner at National Review.

Big Hollywood : Tucson Massacre: 'The View,' Colbert & Stewart Don't Blame Palin

Exactly. They're equating those who politicized the issue in the first place with those who were forced to defend themselves against unfounded charges of being the cause of a mass murder. Stewart and Colbert have no problem pointing out when the right is wrong, but when the left is wrong, they condemn both sides.

Big Hollywood : Why John Wayne Still Matters

His first review didn't say anything about the novel. Both film versions stay pretty close to the novel in terms of plot, but the new version is much more true to the novel in terms of tone and characterization. In particular, the focus on Mattie is much closer to the entire point of the novel of showing how she would be shaped into becoming the woman seen in the epilogue. What really baffles me is that when this film was announced, so many people shouted "How dare they remake a John Wayne movie." When it came out, that has now switched to "How dare they NOT remake the Wayne version." I say this as someone who likes Wayne and considers him the greatest star of all time, but that doesn't mean there is no room for a more accurate telling of the source material. In addition, I don't understand the need to bring politics into the discussion. The film contains no sucker punches. All it's concerned with is telling a story.

Big Hollywood : America Loves Manly Men Not Metrosexual Emos

Variations on this article get posted here every couple months, and it really seems like the term "metrosexual" is used so often that it's lost its meaning. It originally came about to describe guys who were way too concerned about keeping up with trendy fashions and making themselves look "pretty" than about doing his job and doing what is right. Now it gets thrown around whenever the author thinks some guy doesn't have big enough muscles. This is a site for conservative thought on film, so I expect the authors at least (not to mention the posters) to understand the definition of the words they use. It's liberals who like to redefine words to support their arguments. This particular post discusses this new incarnation of Superman. The author seems to argue that because Superman is now a whiney liberal who seems to think he's above it all, that he is a metrosexual. No. That makes him a whiney liberal who thinks he's above it all. As for the other actors mentioned, what exactly makes them metrosexual? I agree, I hate Ashton Kutcher. But I hate him because he's stuck in a state of perpetual frat boyism. I've got no reason to believe he gets facials and manicures. I think I'm just getting sick of reading these stupid articles about how any guy the author doesn't think would make a believable action star isn't a man. It's lazy and a cheap way to get positive feedback. And I hate metrosexuals, but that's not what this article is about.

Right! A lot of the show's questions were answered like that. I'm sure some of the lingering questions can easily be answered by things that were implied. For example: Where were the DHARMA food drops coming from? Well, we learned that Mrs. Hawking found The Lamp Post DHARMA station that allowed people to find the Island. She was aware that Desmond was on the Island pushing the button and she knew that this was important work (She knew this because she had Faraday's journal). It's likely she had resources to continue the food drops.

Walt never brought a dead bird back to life. A bird he was thinking about crashed into the window and died. Walt was special. How was he special? He had telekinetic powers. Those powers came full circle when he appeared to Locke and stopped him from killing himself, allowing Locke to continue on his mission. That was Walt's role in events. They answered HOW he was special, but they did not answer WHY. That is left up to the viewer. Had they answered WHY, it would have raised more questions. At some point, the creators have to draw a line on the scope of the show. Jack's tattoos were explained in "Stranger in a Strange Land." He received them in Thailand, and they mean "He walks among us but is not one of us." It signified that he would eventually step into a leadership role. As leader of the survivors, a lot of people came to resent his decisions, setting him apart from the group, even as he was with them.

Big Hollywood : 2009 Oscar Nominations

I understand that Avatar uses an advanced motion capture system. That is why is is nominated for VISUAL EFFECTS. Cinematography deals with lighting and framing scenes to capture the images of the actors and sets on film. CGI lets the director ignore that and create whatever images he wants on the computer.

I really like Gilliam, too. Time Bandits, Brazil, Munchausen, Fisher King, and 12 Monkeys are great. The one problem I have with him is he sometimes neglects a coherent story in favor of interesting visuals. I just saw The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus. The story is a bit convulted, but I really enjoyed it. It's definately a step up from his last few. (I really don't understand the cult following for Fear and Loathing).

Big Hollywood : Spoilerific Thoughts: 'Avatar' is No 'Dances With Wolves,' and More...

"You will always be able to tell creatures like the ones in Avatar are CGI simply because no such creatures in the real world exist. Since these are made up creatures from an alien planet far far away they aren't going to look real in that since." Your argument misses the point. Of course the audience knows that when a fake creature shows up in a movie that it is not real. The difference is whether it looks like it physically exists along side the human actors. Jabba the Hut from "Return of the Jedi" or the alien from "Alien" look like they physically exist in our world because the puppet or the costume actually does. Therefore, the lighting and the laws of physics affect them the same way they affect the human actors. I don't care how sophisticated the CGI is in Avatar, the fact remains that our brains can still detect those images as computer images. They still appear to be completely fake. Kermit the Frog looks like a puppet, but he is more real to me than the pretty pictures in Avatar.
