"Maybe purchase the first season of Red Eye to replace it... "

SNL is dead and doesn't even know it yet but all of us know that Red Eye is the successor.

"I didn't laugh once."

For something to be funny it has to have a grain of truth.

It's extraordinary how everything is a niche product these days, nothing is made for broad appeal, meaning for more than 50% of the available audience. And they stay viable only because the people in control of the advertising dollar are of like mind as the producers of the non-funny programs. Eventually it will be fade-out.

"Of course, this last episode DID have Nancy Pelosi stabbing George Washington in the back and killing him. For what it's worth."

It's not worth anything. It might have been funny if it were the other way around.

"Growing up and living with a broken sense of humor must be a sad state indeed."

Badinov, a broken sense of humor is still better than no sense of humor which is what we have these days.

Why do the cast have to do the writing? Is the network too cheap to employ actual comedy writers? Now there a scheme that could reduce unemployment: give comedy writers something to do.
