Why? That's a perfectly fair comment. He said he's ranking the teams based on this season, not last year's results (exception for #1). Thus far, Boise has beaten by 3 a team that then lost to an FCS team by 5. Iowa beat a BCS conference team by 28 points.

I agreed with you on OSU football over Iowa Wrestling until I read your comment on the women's team:

"My pick: This is an easy spike. It’s Penn State volleyball. Three straight NCAA titles says it all."

I've read several rumors online today that the way Beebe is going to get that sort of money is locking the Big 12 in for a 20-25 year contract. Which is great in the short term as it would hold the league together for a few years, but think about what that means down the road.

If you really lock in at those numbers, in 2035 an average Big 12 team (not Texas) will make less money from TV revenue than an SEC team or Big 10 team today. That's nuts.

I think you're right that that's "a big if" re: the money being there in the Big 12, Mike. Think about this sentence again:

"Incredible as it seems, the departure of Nebraska from the Big 12 could turn out to help ISU."

Does that really make sense to anyone? The Big 12 loses one of their top 3 most popular and marketable teams, and all of a sudden the commissioner is able to produce a revenue stream that doubles what they were bringing in before? That would be like the Big 10 losing Penn State and Delaney going out and upping the ESPN contract from $100 million per year to $200.

I'm somewhat skeptical, but I suppose we'll see.

That's a ludicrous argument, and ISU fans should be embarrassed that their athletic director would say something so silly.

There is a WORLD of difference between a direct state subsidy and cable network pricing tiers. If you really don't like it, you don't have to buy cable. Last time I checked, Iowa residents who didn't want to subsidize Iowa State athletics didn't have a choice to not pay taxes.

And yes, it's unfortunate that the cable industry business model means that we have to purchase tiered products, but that's the nature of the industry. It would be just as silly to say that sports fans "subsidize" gardeners by having to pay for HGTV even if they don't want it, or to say that non-sports fans "subsidize" every sports program (professional and college) in the country by having to pay for ESPN.

Marc - was the depth chart handed out at the PC? I saw that they didn't upload it at Hawkeyesports.com yet.

Reread my comment. I never said it wasn't a predictor - I said it wasn't a guarantee. And I'm specifically responding to the exact statement made in the original article - "Iowa fans have said loud and clear that Northern Iowa Coach Ben Jacobson should merit no consideration for the job, despite reaching 30 wins, the Sweet 16 and beating the nation’s best team." Scott is obviously trying to make a comment about Iowa fans who don't want Jacobson. What I am specifically saying is that if that if someone doesn't think that Jacobson would be a good fit, those 30 wins and the win over Kansas shouldn't automatically change that.

I would hope that the University is going to do an objective analysis of the strengths and weaknesses of each prospect and not get too caught up in any guy's record this year or results in the current year's NCAA Tournament. That's all I'm saying.

Why should the governor have any say whatsoever in how a privately funded organization spends its money?

The comment about Jacobsen is silly. Lickliter won 29 games his last year at Butler. Number of games won at his previous school is no guaranteed measure of success. I'm GLAD that Iowa fans are looking at this more qualitatively and objectively looking at the current needs of the program - as much as it hurts to say, Iowa has been sorely lacking in competitive talent over the past few years. A great Xs and Os guy isn't necessarily what we need.

Saying that St. Johns is a good job because it's in the Big East is like saying Vanderbilt is a good job because it's in the SEC.
